Show GOES BY THE WRONG NAME A LONDON paper called truth which has on many occasions proven its title to be very inappropriate recently published an article on mormon lormon missionaries sio sion slon narles aries and their successful work in sc several veral verai english counties the account was supplemented with the remark that it is lamentable lo 10 think that after the repeated exposures exposit ea of the creed there still remain in this country people pable capable ot of belag ensnared by the butr outrage gec ous ous ons the plausible vagabonds who are regul regularly aAy dispatched to europe from utah in search of recruits in america the humbug ot of mormonism has kias long been so EO thoroughly exploded that converts are rarely forthcoming except in the persona of individuals divi duals whose room would usually be considered tobe to be preferable to their company there are two mistakes in the remarks markhof of truth we wc will not designate them by a harsher term the first is in regard to exposures of the tile creed there have been no s such h exposures except those made uty nty by the mormon missionaries themselves preachers and journalists i have made many pretended ile exposi espos expos x Os j ures I 1 which turned out to be nothing no but exposures of their own ignorance e and mendacity mormonism on acquaintance is so different to the thing exposed by its opponents that th the e misrepresentations intended to prevent people from investigating and believing have the very opposite effect there Is not one editor or preacher in a thousand who has any distinct idea of what the mormons cormons Mor IMor mons or latter day saints believe truth for instance could not tell the truth on this subject without first insel instituting tin diligent inquiry as to the facts were there has never been a book or article written nor a lecture or sermon delivered prompted by a bitter against I 1 mormonism I 1 that has fairly presented the subject to the public in these caricatures of the mormon creed and attacks upon its believers great reat assistance is rendered to the missionaries from utah and those who circulate the falsehoods that are commonly told about the elders and their doctrines aid materially in bringing about the results which to truth ap appear P ear so lamentable perhaps a change of policy would produce a change of effects and if anti antl II mor mons would learn what mormonism really is before they attempt to expose it they might desist from creating an excitement about it and so withdraw their help in keeping the subject before the public the other error in truths statement isthan is that mormonism has been exploded 1 1 in america and that its converts are few except of undesirable individuals divi duals the american pulpit and press are it anything less informed on the subject than their european con freres mid in the various Ir lous ious states of the union people are quietly investigating and becoming believers in the doctrines doctrine s taught by our elders some of the papers in the southern states have tapers been een bewall bewail bewailing ln ii the fact that many of the I 1 mormon converts convents are well to do intelligent citizens generally esteemed and respected before their acceptance cep tance of the mormon faith became known these journals ana and truth do not look at this matter through rOugh the samp spectacles would it not be betten better for truth to fond find out something a about b on talf ga bea 0 re dilating upon ei 0 o te to make a thorough change cliame in if its title titie tle tie |
