Van Dellen The blood pressure In infants and children varies widely under different situations of stress, but average normals have been established. Accurate tests in young children are difficult and time consuming; hence the procedure is not routine. If indicated, however, a reading can be obtained. The physician needs not only proper equipment but a proper technique. The width of the arm cuff of the machine must relate to the size of the childs arm. If It is too narrow, abnormally high readings are obtained; conversely, with too wide a band, low levels will be res corded. Only about of the upper arm should be covered and the youngster must be quiet. In any circumstances, the blood pressure varies with age, weight, and height The obese youngster may have a higher level than the thin one, and crying or struggling will shoot the gauge up 50 points. From infancy to age 4, the average systolic reading is 85, and by age 10 is 100. The readings fluctuate through the stormy adolescent period, finally stabilizing at the adult level. An accurately taken blood pressure reading above adult levels that persists during childhood is caused usually by such abnormalities as a congenital heart condition, kidney disease, or an endocrine gland disturbance. two-third- "V vx r For Thanksgiving p 4- Every Norbest turkey is 'i U.
