for one so young we have been permitted to make the following extracts the night of the day we left salt bait lacewe stayed at Farmington and were orn orf next morning at 7 clock stopping at ogden only long enough to purchase 0 P tickets and check our baggage to benson the car in which we rode was packed full of people from every nation and we were much annoyed by beveral several who insisted on smoking the romany rye bye company were war on the same bame train going to san han francisco where when they opened an engagement on the following monday night the journey all the first day wa very tiresome tino tiro thors there being nothing to see geo except sage brush and band nand about 2 pm we ve came to the little town of tecoma and a few minutes later 1 made e my dirst first exit from utah and crossed over into nevada after supper at elko eiko we made our beds on the heats beats and brother layton nayton lay lwy ton and I 1 slept there not being room enough for three uncle david preferring I 1 should take the first half of the night while he sat bat up at 1 a in he called me up and he then took my mv place and slept the rest of the night at daylight we were in eight of the sierra nevada mountains and at ten minutes past 8 a m entered california and the mountains the ascent was so steep now that thau the train took on another engine we went through many snow sheds and tunnels one of them shed and tunnel together taking ono one hour to pas raws through it and at hait hair past 11 a m we were on top of the summit feet above the sea fea level levei the weather was very cold and the snow nearly a foot deep here and there in the mountains wo we would come to a house half burled buried in the snow enow which reminded one of the convents read of in the mountains of as if we would be hurled burled from the track shortly after sundown we reached benecia where cars pase passengers engers engert baggage and all were run on en to the boat and boated floated over the hills and daleb daies the most prominent building we observed was the tha residence ot of general Crocker which stands on the tip top of one of the highest hills it looked like an ancient castle I 1 rode up california street five miles for five cent eland was waa almost bewildered at thoughts residences residence a with lovely lawns conservatories conserva tories ete etc with all nil the plants peculiar to california the grounds of the golden gate park pank are laid off in the most beautiful styles and shapes and in the ilarae and aquarium arc art plants and fishes of every description we first one most of the street cars in the city are run by cables they go up a hill bill as aa fast as a horse can run at a slant of forty one degrees in oakland wo visited the catholic church the first just opposite a saloon all in full blast on sunday night returning ta too our hotel wo we missed the steamer and after crossing on another were ware carried two miles beyond our hotel by the cars we had to walk back and got in at I 1 on monday morning having been out night eight seeing since 6 5 am the day before we stayed at los angeloa two days most of the people here are mexicans and indians we rode down to ban san pedro a port on tee tho pacific and on the way saw large vineyards extending for miles and milea miles with orange and lemon trees trew loaded with fruit while bushels lay jay rotting on the ground at col coi colton ton we heard that the bridge spanning the santa anna river had fallen through with eighteen cam carh of freight I 1 went down to the wreck and staid two hours and when I 1 got back to the station 3 found fou n d the passengers for arizona had all been transferred and the train gone uncle divid thinking I 1 was wag among them had gone a also albo so and I 1
