He was so busy working on the chest that he forgot all about the birds. Suddenly, he heard a great fluttering of wings. He went where he had put the bread and water, and there were about 100 birds. They were eating the bread, dnnking the water, and enjoying it very much. When they finished all of it, off they fiew. The old man watched them go and was very glad he had something to feed them. When he went to get the pan that he had put the water in, he noticed something very bnght and shiny lying on the ground. He picked it up, held it in his hands, and looked at it very carefully. The old man went back to his workshop, where he made thing0 for people in the village from the wood he cut in the forest. He was making a chest for a young lady, who was going to pay him forty dollars. That was the most money anyone had ever given him for his work. Now all he had left to do was to varnish it. He was quite thrilled to be getting that much money and it would help buy that new suit he needed so badly.
