Fatalities among cyclist last year totalled 1.100, up from 1972s 850, according to the National Safety Council And the sheer increase in numbers of cyclists automatically reflects in the injury and death toll. The time has come for action and assorted groups are taking it. Several states have passed legislation to allocate one percent of the auto use and gas tax to develop bicycle paths and other facilities A bill before the U S Senate has a section calling for safety educ itmn in the schools With the demand for cycles increasing, the number of imiorts is bound to increase also. The Bicycle Institute of America (BIA), a trade group representing U S manufacturers, says that as of July 10 all imports will have to pass more dangers standards outlined by the Federal BIA says the burden of teaching safety should be shared by bicyclists and motorists alike.
