Kidd, has been granted the largest portion of $1,200,000 made available for the Lake Powell study. The UNM funds, $320,600, comes from the National Science Foundation. Ten other institutions are involved in the three-yea- r study. Kidd said research done so far indicates that the water quality is good but has been somewhat degraded m a portion of the reservoir that receives heavy recreational u use. also said that natural weathering of geologic deposits has put enough mercury into the lake to raise the levels of mercury in some of the larger predator fish, such as bass and walleye. While the fish in the lake remain edible, Kidd said, no more than a pound should be eaten per week.
