MAY 30, 1973 Letters from our readers M A4 Does public really need all that protection ? )hmi To the Editor imoiwipKiiwT'iaLuiazHii'a The latest to fall victim to the Great Protectors of John Q. Public is U bicycle. It has been reported just recently that the Food and Drug Administration has proposed the first set of Federal Safety Standards for the bicycle. The rules are awaiting public comment after which final approval will be given by the newly created Federal Product Safety Commission. I think it is safe to say that when the new rules go into effect it is estimated that the cost of new bicycles will go up from $4 to $3. mmssmm DRlUin SPIN LINE 195 1 Most of the added cost is said to be going for the addition of reflectors. Other costs would go for nonslip pedals and brakes. Additional proposals would eliminate sissy bars and high rise handle bars that reach more than 16 inches above the seat. I I 99' 12-l- b. W hats to be done about this growing monster called government control? How do we get the government out of the people-contrbusiness and back into the business? I dont know any sure answers to these questions. Now I dont object to safety standards. EvMaybe we could start by having John Q. eryone wants to feel that someone is looking Public (better known as the silent majority) out for his or her welfare, and by and large become a lot more curious about the things private enterprise has done a pretty respectawhich directly affect him. Contact your conble job of it. But after reading the rationale and let them know how you feel about for the application of these regulations, I have gressmen the way your tax money is spent. Let them know to come to the conclusion that there must be how you feel about the types of controls that are more important projects to which the governbeing imposed upon you. The soft blue color they have chosen is a welcome contrast to the dirty appearance of most places in the area. I understand the man who helped influence the foundry to beautify has recently passed on. We should all take our hats off to this man and those who implemented his- words of wisdom. Nielsens letter It is a complete distortion of economic and sociological fact to classify the activities of a labor organization as those of a monopoly. The character and purposes of unions and business organizations are fundamentally different on every basis of comparison. The success of a labor organization is its ability to represent a group of employes in achieving a higher standard of living, greater job security and promoting the general social and economic welfare interests of the members. years of struggle by unions to obtain pensions from the aged, health and welfare legislation, legal protection, and even the right to vote. And why has the highway department failed to alter the bottleneck since the initial construction? Moreover, if the designers of such a fiasco were made to change the design at their own expense, the project would be completed very fast And if the government officials who approved the obstacle course contributed from their own fluids, the projeet would be completed in record time. measure To the Editor: construction combines the best of polyurethane foam and fibergiass to give structural strength, lightness and flotation. 118 long, 54 beam, 22 depth at the center . . . with Clinton motor. In recent years Will the we have seen government safety standards imposed on everything from airplanes of aii sizes to portable would apply oniy to bikes made for children under the age of 18 because the proposals were made under an act that was written to protect the safety of children." Now, can you imagine the problems that will arise in trying to enforce something as ambiguous as that? an ecology-minde- d gentlePicture this man walks into the local bicycle shop to buy himself a bicycle. Before he can nde away with it, he has to sign affidavits to the effect child ride the that he will not let his teen-ag- e bike until he or she turns 18 years old or he must insure that his new bike will meet all the new safety standards as set down by the FDA and FPSC. It looks to me as though they may soon have to create a new agency just to handle the paperwork involved in enforcing all of these new standards. East Furthermore, the project could be partially funded by patrolmen arresting slow drivers who persist in driving in the right lane. From the Interchange to 79th South slow drivers could be arrested in great numbers. But the patrolmen arrest only speeding drivers, whose numbers are few. Although freeways were designed to give speed advanand tage to the traveler, the bottleneck at Interchange force the driver into dangerous driving conditions that could be avoided by redesigning the freeway and do away with the present obstacle course.
