They are students at Highland High School and along with other high school students, college students and senior citizens mak up a program known as School Volunteers, Inc. Its the personal touch and enthusiasm that Claire Fred and Shelley, and other students, have brought to their work that has sparked the program. Palmer Deseret News Staff Writer The purpose of School Volunteers, Bits 19 to make all facets of public education more effective, both for students and teachers, according to Mrs. Naomi Evans, director. Mrs. Evans, a retired school principal, works closely with school personnel, such as Mrs. Jessie L. Nelson, a unified studies (formerly special education) teacher at Highland. She Is in charge of the student SAE (Student At lion for Education) Club. As members of the club and student assistants to ti public schools, Claire, Fred and Shelley serve as volunteers four of five days each week at Beacon Heights. They work directly with students, helping them with problems to a particular subject or in other aspects of their education. The main emphasis in the program is tutoring, helping e children on a basis or in groups. Behavior modi-- , fication techniques are a big part of the program. The teen-ag- e volunteers are often praised for their ability to relate to the students on their level, and for the fine rapport they have with them. Claire said she enjoys her assignment at Beacon Heights, where strong emphasis is given for preparing students for junior high school. Its unfortunate for children in the sixth grade to be unable to write. Others have a poor attitude about school. Its fun to be able to help them, Claire said. While many of the volunteers in Mrs. Evans program are high school and college students, still others are retired, are housewives, or businessmen. I have several retired people involved who are nearly 80, including Mrs. Elizabeth R. Dickerson, who has printed thousands of word cara for the schools," Mrs. Evans said. While many are engaged in tutorial work, still others handle clerical assignments for teachers. Mrs. Evans said the work of senior citizens in the program is making a tremendous impact in the lives of the students. When the program was Inaugurated in Sait Lake City, some teachers were reluctant to let someone help them. But not many are reluctant now, Mrs. Evans said. Now I need your help, Abby. Should I cooperate or not? I really dont want to. I feel like a rat. -- BIG MOUTH Teens make terrific teachers $ cooperation. wants me to repeat to Donnas father what I told him.
