This complaint le ied by 'private campground on ners has led to a dispute with the State Highway Department oxer where services" signs should be placed and what f they should say. B Grant Lloyd, vice president lof the Utah Private Parks has met with y officials in an effort to have more signs designating ft campgrounds placed through-Hou- t the state. The result has H been a promise from the high-Swa- I Highway Department that if more signs will be placed fi designating services available within five miles of each interchange. The signs, which will cost approximately $2,0ti0, will not only specify but camping, will also contain five other when legends appropriate, including gas, food, lodging, phone and hospital. It isnt necessary to spend all that information when all we need is a simple little sign about six inches by two feet which says camping and has an arrow, Lloyd said. The parks association has about 40 members throughout the state. $2,000 to giv pr-vat- "A person looking for a motel can find several, but a person looking for a campground is usually looking for a specific one. There arent that many of them," he added. said many Lloyd who visit his camp tourists park in Kaysville complain that you cant find this state. The in campgrounds with guy the big camper or trailer is a stranger and doesnt know where hes going, hes been invited into the state by the Utah Travel Council, and when he gets here they dont have the courtesy to tell him where to go. Of course, he gets mad, the campground owner said. David L. Kenmson, chief traffic engineer for the State Highway Department, said it would be irresponsible for the department to place specifying signs camping without including the other services available. organization have termed this definition arbitrary. With so few campgrounds, we shouldnt be classified along with motels, gas stations and food. When we become as numerous as they are, we would be willing to he eliminate the signs, Another point of contention has centered around the departments refusal to place services signs in an urban area, which highway officials define as an area m Utah stretching from "just north of of to just south Ogden Provo. vernment Lloyds travels in other states have convinced him that the small sign with an arrow to designate available campgrounds is the most popular approach to the problem. In California, signs not camping, but also include the name of the campground, and theyre certainly as urban as Utah, he commented. Lloyd and other Utah Private Paiks Association members are attempting to bring the problem before Gov.
