Show i 1 . V Pass 75 Emission Standards 6 Autos - NEW YORK (UPI) Six automobile engines now have passed the Environmental ProtectionAgencys 1975 emission control standards and none is American-made. sixth is the German-mad- CHRYSLER MOTORS CORROiUriM e diesel. ' The Mazda has a Wankel rotary engine. The Subaru and Mitsubishi have conventional piston engines and the Suzi a two-cycpiston engine. The Hondas ia a new dual combustion chamber piston en-i- n production. Only the prototypes have passed the tests. General Motors experimental Wankel rotary engine so far has failed , to pass the 1975 test ' as applied by GM at its own proving grounds, according to Wards automotive reports. GM tested 10 cars with the experimental Wankels and all failed tests at 300 miles or less. The EPA requires the motors meet the tests for 50,000 miles. Since it is conceded a Wankel engine is basically dirtier than a piston engine in hydrocarbon emissions, although much cleaner in nitrogren oxide emissions, the method used by Mazda in the tests passing becomes a matter of inter est. Mazda does not use a catalytic converter for an exhaust gas recirculation system for purification such as Detroits automakers presently are using.
