Deseret News Staff Sports Writer . . Utah fans Tuesday win get a look at why the American Basketball Association is changing its image from a guard league to a forward league. The opportunity comes Tuesday night, when Game. Utah hosts the sicth annual ABA Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. Such names as: Utahs Willie Wise; Virginias Julius' Erving ; Indiana's George McGinnis; Kentuckys Dan Issel; Carolina's Billy Cunningham and Joe Caldwell: Dallas Rich Jones, and San Diegos Stew Johnson are ready to show why the ABA image has changed, and will show the maturity of the league with its top forwards. This is not to say that the league doesnt have any great guards. The league does. Utahs James Jones; Denvers Ralph Simpson and Warren Jabali; Memphis George Thompson; San Diegps Chuck Williams; Carolinas Mack Calvin; New Yorks Bill Melchionni and Kentuckys Louie Dampier will argue the point that the ABA doesnt have top quality guards. The ABA would like to offer forwards like Wise to the NBA. Or McGinnis and Erving. It would be a challenge for the NBA to match the ABAS young, talented wing men. Most of the NBA forwards, like. New Yorks Dave DeBusschere and Bill Bradley are reaching the retirement age. With its young talent the ABA is the league of the future. All-St- ar ' " ' yVN teA' MEL DANIELS t . The 4 ir: other day several were hanging onto my car from front to back, and I didnt dare move until a neighbor came and shooed them away. Isnt there anything that can be done? G.D., Salt Lake City. Something is being done now, at least as far as your school is concerned. At the request of the principal, a representative of the police department was at the school recently to talk to the students. He advised them of the dangers of hitching a ride on the outside of a car. A child can slip and be run over or if tne car should take a turn the child could be thrown off and perhaps be hit by another vehicle. This does not just involve your neighborhood but most children in this age ; group everywhere. The actions are illegal, however. What can you do? First, talk to the school where these children attend. Perhaps a personal confrontation with the principal might help. In your area the principal caid he has talked with the students evpry day, and he and another school official try to patrol the comers where most of the violations occur. Although he said the offenses are not taking place on school grounds. If the school cannot help, then you should call the police, preferably at a time when the children are hitching rides on cars. The presence and talk by an officer may be all it would take to deter them. Also officers can and many times do take the names of children. As a last resort there is legal recourse. A complaint can be registered with the county attorney with the possibility of its going to juvenile court. Probable charges would be jay, walking or the traffic code concerning touching private property without permission. We suggest you watch the situation and see if the measures already taken dont help. We think they might. HELPING HAND Tne hardest thing in the world to do is to sell a man something he does not want. But, thats what we try to do every week on Saturday in Helping Hand.
