Show DESERET NEWS, Thursday, October 5, 1972 II DESERET NEWS ' SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH 1 Thursday, October 5, 1972 Trail Signs Tell History - way, Barker said The historical society provided information on the signs BIG FINEY, Wvo The Lander Cutoif of the Oregon Trail isn't even mentioned in most encyclopedias, but the story of triumph and tragedy is dramatically told here on trail markers Histonans say the Lander Cutoff saved many miles on the Oregon Trail established in 1H41. but that travelers had to be careful to get through before late September. The alternative was to get trapped by heavy Wyoming Range snows. Not all made it There is even a marker commega birth A small stone on the edge of a havfield near the mouth of South Piney Canyon west of Big Piney, reads: "Montmy Hefflene born here, 1864 Ironically, one marker near Coal Creek indicates the area where a young girl not far from the marker telling of the birth of another was thrown from a wagon and drowned tr. The usual trail markers, are found in Oravestones, number farther up South Pinev Canyon. The cutoff began east of Ft Bndger, veered northward m a short cut over Witherspoon Pass into Star Valley and picked up the old Oregon Trail eastern Idaho. again in Many of the grave markers are located ai the top of South Piney Canyon, with concrete posts marking the irail route into LaBarge Creek drainage and over the Pass According to Rod Barker.
