Show i t 8 DESERET NEWS, MONDA. B OCTOBER 31, 1977 , Swedetown move rejected sewer lines into the neighborhood. A committee will be established to decide which projects should have priority in upgrading the neighborhood. Members will be appointed within the next two weeks and will represent all interests involved. Mrs. Solt said she was disappointed with today's decision, but vowed to continue the struggle for relocation. She said that the city would save money by purchasing the homes and turning the neighborhood into an industrial park rather than trying to salvage the area for residents. Salt Lake City Streets Commissioner Jess Agraz agreed that the city may ultimately spend more money in rehabilitation, but said outright purchase of the homes would amount to speculation using city funds. lie said if the city could find an industrial concern willing to guarantee purchase of the land, a contract might be worked out whereby the city would relocate the residents. lie emphasized, however, that this could be done only if the city had a guarantee for the land purchase after it acquired the property. By Neil Robinson Deseret News staff writer Swedetown residents will have to live with heavy industry and its associated pollution, the Salt Lake City Commission said today, refusing to provide $1.3 million to relocate the 43 families of the neighborhood. The commission said it won't provide the money for relocation, but will provide a possibly grepter sum for extension of the sanitary sewer system into the neighborhood, curb and gutter and other neighborhood improvements. Located at about 15th North and Beck Street, Swedetown has become a residential island in a sea of heavy industry ranging from a scrap metal company to a refinery and a rock crushing bur iness. The Swedetown residents, headed by Mary Solt, 992 Everett Ave., asked the commissioners three weeks ago to appropriate Community Developmept Funds to purchase their homes and relocate the families. The commission refused, but promised to have health codes enforced and to extend the Officials Viday were trying to idenbaby girl found tify an by a nurse Sunday at 9:45 p.m. at Holy Cross Hospital. The FBI is checking fingerprints and footprints to see if she is a baby kidnapped Oct. 7 in Chicago. Police said a baby bottle and box of disposable diapers were found with the girl, who was dressed in a blue and red long sleeved polo shirt, red pants, red and white hooded sweater, patent leather shoes and flowered plastic pants. The nurse discovered the child on the hospital's third floor center wing. A note pinned to the back of her clothing said, "This is the lost girl from and gave a telephone Chicago, number. Police said the letters had been cut from a magazine and taped to the paper. Police called the telephone number and found it was that of a Chicago woman. She said she knew nothing of 1 Police said the girl is 29 inches tall, pounds, with pierced ears and an Afro haircut in pigtails and appears healthy. She was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center, 3534 S. 700 West, where she remains in protective custody. FBI agent Bob Schamay said the FBI is conducting an investigation based on the girl's description, the Items found and her footprints and finger prints. He said Chicago hospitals are being contacted to try to match the prints. Chicago police said a ransom demand had been made to the father of the child kidnapped there. 22 Continued from B-- I standards in county streams. In addition, county officials wanted the creation of a water quality department and advisory council necause federal water pollution acts will not allow further degradation of streams or other water sources. Therefore, it is expected that certain treatment facilities will be necessary within the next few years, and county commissioners want control of the planning and building efforts. In addition, the county needed some sort of council to qualify for federal grants to help in the planning and building efforts. Commissioner Pete Kutulas today questioned Sen. Fred Fhilinson, Lake, on whether the city's thmat not to participate in planning would have a great effect on the council and department activities. Finlinson is a member of the committee R-S- "I suspect that when this is organized and we start holding meetings, Salt Lake City will participate," Finlinson said. "They are going to have difficulty getting their grants from the federal government if they do not." Fin'bison said drafters of the new ordinance had made every effort to accommodate the city's requests. He said, for example, a clause had been inserted in the ordinance specifying that the county will not t- -y to control or inject itself into the management of water rights. Salt Lake City holds precious water rights in many county canyons, such as Big and Little Cottonwood and Emigration canyons.
