The city built a foundation for the building as part of a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project durDr. ing the late 1930s, Bames said. Money for the WPA projects ran out and the foundation sat for a while. In 1940, Dr. Bames said, he convinced the County Commission to apply for a federal grant to build a new health complex. Prior to construction of the new building, he shared an office on the stxnd floor of the county courthouse with then county attorney Calvin Rampton. Construction of the building was completed in 1945. In 1964, following Dr. Barae's retirement, the health department moved back to Farmington where it is presently located in the courthouse basement i V 4 " r .
