Raines by Third District Court Judge James S. Sawaya. Here i s a case of an habitual criminal who stole a gun, got someone to teach him how to shoot it, bought or stole ammunition for it. loaded it, cocked it, threatened to shoot it, then shot it and killed the fine man who resisted the robbery, and the defense attorney claimed he did it "inadvertently." The jury convicted Raines of murder on the basis of the evidence presented in the trial. The judge permitted two witnesses to try to influence the jury against the death penalty and then apparently required the jury to return a unanimous v'erdiet for death penalty or it would not be sentenced. sthe Why did it have to be unanimous? The laws of this and nation tt re passed by a simple majority; s presidential vetoes are over ridden by a majority; the greatest issues of this nation are the great "Supreme" Court by a simple dmeac itodriedtybl if ever does this august body reach decision. Yet this judge requires a decision from 12 jurors selected at the death penalty to protect society against a irepeat performance by this irresponsible murderer. It seems to me that it is time for the revolution. Our prisons are overcrowded. The cost of operating ithem is a root burden on the taxpayers of the state, yet the protection of the public from the criminals sentenced to the prison is minimal. Hardly by that some of these criminals do not lelscwaepeekorg paroled from the prison. Ralph S. Caimon Bountiful first-degr- :!;i EfEa. .z. .
