Many months of effort have been made to bring us to this point, he said. Regarding the exclusion of Slate Canyon, which reduced the original 7, development to 4,500 acres, Nielsen said, We hope they havent closed the door on possible future expansion. However, we are pleased that they will allow us to use sufficient area to make the project a year-roun- d tourist attraction. The ski resort development was first proposed in 1959, but a master plan was not submitted until August 1974. The first Draft Environmental Statement was made public last April. Following a period of public review, the Forest Service evaluated public comments and proposed the modifications listed in the Final En- ironmental Statement. Also included in the Heritage Mounbase site north tain project is a of the Utah State Hospital, purchased from Provo City. Planned at the base site are four cultural villages, which will spotlight 500-ac- re 90-d- 187-ac- early Utah, Scandinavia, the British Isles and other European areas. According to Nielsen, the themes of the villages will connect Utahs past with each of those areas. The village complex will include 725 hotel rooms, 19 restaurants, and a 2,400 seat theater, which will revolve around a stationary stage. Also planned are a nine-hol- e golf course, 16 tennis courts, and possibly a swimming pool. Private residential development would occupy 46 acres, including 78 single family homes, 76 apartments, 112 townhouses, and 76 duplexes. Present estimated cost for the base site project is $60 million. The Forest Service approval will allow developers to build ski runs and lifts in Slate and Rock Canyons. Fall 1978 is the date set for the formal opening of the resort, formerly known as the Four Seasons project. The proposed ski resort has been the subject of controversy for several years. Nebeker said a team of Forest Service specialists will participate in planning and supervising every phase of the development.
