They were to imagine they were going on a long trip across the ocean. The teacher asked them to go home and make a list of the best things to take along on a trip if they were never to return. "They thought hard about it," Mrs. Oliver said. "This is a decision the Pilgrims had made, to- leave and not come back. "We went over the lists, pointing out things similar to the Pilgrims', that they had to take food, clothing, tools, equipment and their families," she said. Some suggestions were anachronistic. A few said they should take ice cream and their favorite toys along. Mrs. Oliver explained that Pilgrims had no refrigerators and that space on the Mayflower was at a premium, so most toys had to be left behind. The lists became the first page in each child's history book for the Thanksgiving unit, a folder containing drawings of Indians and Pilgrims, Indian picture writing, crayon-colore- d vocabulary words and other information.
