PRESTON MANASSA colorado march 1881 editor deseret jeisi it commenced snowing here this morning a fine mist but it fell thick enough to hide bide from view most of the time in the forenoon the foothills about noon the thermometer stood at 34 and hence the snow melted pretty rapidly for awhile but later in the da day y the mercury sank a little below fr freezing point and the ground is covered to the depth of an inch and a half or two inches apostle E snow left for home a day or two since he in fit company with president mas kas silas L 6 smith and brother edin allen alien sen returned las last t week from a trip into new mexico and arizona brother snow gave e us a most excellent discourse on sunday evening which was replete with words of wisdom which a irwill it will be well for us all to remember and put in practice we are sorry forry he is gone would aou id th at he could be with us every sabbath permit me to relate an our sabbath school last sabbath the ohe writer had the pleasure of giving out some beautiful books as a now row reward ard of merit to olne some oine of his students in the day school which closed on the tile ath dinst the giving of these books book a as a reward reward of merit thus publicly in the presence prepuce pres ence of perhaps 50 60 boys sand and girls and the excellent and timely remarks which the incident dent called forth from bishop ball and others ot liers made an impression which will not soon be fbi foi gotten in this connection it is proper to state that elder eldur J H vannatta of your city fumi furnished shed and sent the books from salt lake late city at his own ex pence pene rene he also suggested the plan af giving out the books as a reward for good behavior at school all little boys and girls who may read this a as well M thoe tho e of larger grof groi growth fth may learn if they have not alread already y learned that there is no premium on bad conduct or bad lessons the people here have not commenced to farm any as yet but I 1 think it would have been well if wheat had been sown during the fine weather we had bad a week or two since if our land had been plowed up in the fall and properly irrigated then and our wheat planted say two weeks ago I 1 think our pros prospect peet for a crop would have been more flatte fiatte mg ing than as it is however this is 19 yet comparatively a new settlement se tt e men t and some time will yet bere bare quiren before we can get all things in proper p ro er shape and just as they should sho be it is quito quite an item 0 of f expense to live here as yet especially y to new comers as every everything thing they the eat and wear must come out oft of the by a pocket and if one got a pretty long purse it soon becomes badly swee sween nied led and some of the tender toed shall I 1 say pay have concluded they cant save the mark make a living here and have returned whence they came A few others are casting about for a warmer climate etc etc elg and while it is desirable to have a more genial clime dime one in ht which the rigors of winter are not so severe to the thoughtful latter day severe severo saint paint z t if thih this san ban luis valley were vere uch ucil a place at present outsiders by scores would crowd inhere and soon nill fill this valley up 1 we as a people must make up our minds to live at present wheres others wont live if we will live as we should as the laws of god require of us the elements will be bo blessed for our sakes and this once desert land will be made to blossom as a the roseal rose H P DOTSON |
