I 1 in n th the e i preservation n df of order arder 1011 1111 by y order of X F COL con MORROW signed W V M d libut infantry s 1 po post 1 it adl adi adjutant U tant in the first place 1 I will say that general morrow has bas been it grossly sly siy misinformed 1 I 1 paca myself at any auy person or persons to proad that any soldier ar ac priva private tea ten cit citizen izett either has beell becil of the police orthis of s this city exee exco except I 1 t ng tp in self seif defence or to ta ste tle r 1 l prevent present attempted escape and I 1 am prepared to afford ge general iberal morrow or any other individual ithe the most am ample ampie P le facil facilities ties for ascertaining the truth or falsity of my assertion ser tion and in fact nothing would suit me b betler butler p than to havea have a most thorough and aud complete investigation invests a of the charges madea madei hy by hose who arg continually lying about tile the police force of this city I 1 cannot but regret that general morrows naturally gentlemanly nature should be so misled by those who appear to make it a business to grossly misrepresent things as they are it is true that the police have occasion sometimes to res resort ortto to force in ili making arrests and quelling disturbances tur bances but tu they tuy y never do hig fig when they can perform their sworn duty without when resisted and beaten he has hay no recourse but to use usa force or allow the laws to be broken with impunity and he be derelict inthe luthe ance anco of his duty I 1 may state that heretofore the police and the officers of the them post have acted together with tile the grea est unanimity the police lending every desired aid to the military in sear seat searching ching ehing for stolen property and in detecting military cr criminals mina of bf which general isair row is well aware I 1 have considered it beneath we me heretofore to notice tho the many contemptible temp tible lies circulated and published abouo abour the police force for tor I 1 know certain parties have lied over and over again about us and they know that they have lied just as well as I 1 do I 1 only c condescend on toi to notice so unreliable and abusive a source now because all an individual like general morrow who is generally acknowledged to be a gentlemen who likes fair play appears to be misled by their baseless le s assertions in a city newspaper a recent metee melee n merln in front of the theatre J be tween about half a dozen soldiers and some miners is referred to as f follows the police were called in and when some of the belligerents had been behn been bel n hustled bustled into the street a brutal attack was made by tile the p police 0 lie ile e on oil one or more of the of offenders flenders we are ire informed by citizens who witnessed the outrage til ill that it one of the soldiers was shamefully beaten over the head and f ace cc with bras knuckles the facts of the case mentioned are that only one of the soldiers was struck by the police but not sufficiently bomark him aud antt this was became he lib struck li wicked kicked and resisted them the soldiers hamels name is lewis young and next morning after his trial lie apologized in my presence to the police telling them lid he was tas sorry sorry lle he had bad kicked and struck them and that had he known they hey were officers he would not have done so lie he had a couple or of marks on his nace face which lie he said were inflicted by a citizen who wilo kicked him before becore the tile arrival of the police opt of idne nine soldiers arrested that same night not one of them had a scratch or any complaint of bad treatment to make nia 1 the truth of my statements can cart be discovered by any person who will take tallo the trouble to learn the them A previous version of the affair by th the e same paper art staled ia that four rou r of the soldiers were werL werm horribly beaten which reminds ono one of the old olo adaze adage ada e that silars liars should have good memories A short time since officer hyde was charged with stil sinking xing ting and abusing a frenchman named charles charies A mesa neva nellit and dragging him bini along the floor of the saloon b by Y the th hair or of his head to which statement the proprietors of the place were gentlemen enough to give a flat and unqualified contradiction lu in a card caid published in the paper alluded to etli regard to 6 tho illo case caso of ellis 1111 s also xe referred to lo the fact are as follows ile he wast was partially intoxicated and creating a disturbance nv nov 1872 the police ailva advised ed him to go home and some pome of lil lit hla hia comrades agreed to take him to camp he ha broke broko loos 1000 efroin from them however jlia his unruly conduct one on e odthe of pul put the latteel latter latte fl drewa drew a pistol and presented it at a t the po let lei emans mauls face the theouley Theo affif uler hier er to avoid being killed drew lis his its club and dud struck him dier di over er the head he afterward took cold and the jmj injury gry proved serious it is also asserted that tile the post com corn trl tri mander grider has made frequent com pla pia frits to the city authorities r regarding P the ill treatment of soldiers by the police which ai is untrue there being but one instance of an investigation bei bel being demanded by the military which was freely corded the case alluded to was wherein a soldier who had been fined wished to go to a friend on east temple st to get money that he mi might ht be released he broke confidence fi with the officer who accompanied him mr john smith and ran away the officer fired a shot after him and missed him and subsequently after capturing hima him struck lim aim over the head the officer was tried by the mayor and fined wh which tell lie he promptly paid certain parties wot hot satisfied with this had bad mr lir vir smith taken before judge mci Mel mckean cean tean who wilo placed him mill under fifteen hundred dollar bonds to answer to the grand jury foran for an offerle for which alch he had bad already been tried and purll puril shed the soldier afterwards told mr smith that he was prompted and porcu persuaded aided by certain ultra antl anti mormon ormon persons well known to your correspondent p pon ondene dent to make the complaint upon which he vrr vrn mr smith was rearrested arrested re there are always two sides to a question tu estion how about the conduct of those maltreated mal treated 11 gallant allagit boys in blue brie I 1 call atterol attention tion to a few among many circumstances recently two soldiers soldier created a disturbance at the theatre the police attempted to arrest ono one or of them when he he drew a pistol and antt fired at them he ran oft anu and was pursued by the officers and ili in the pursuit he fired nive five more mora shots at them one of which passed sed sea through tigh one of the 0 officers cers clothing one of tilo the policemen caught aught up with him and while in the act of seizing hirthe him the last shot fired by tile the soldier grazed his bishe head ad unfortunately this gen tio tic boy in blue escaped on feb 1870 two of there harmless creatures named respectively artee and hill knocked down down and abused an indian boy who complained to tile the police the latter went after them to arrest them when they fired at the police who were unarmed but being joined by others continued the pursuit tho the soldiers the while looking baek back and peeping up a running in clife nire fire they were finally captured on the tile east bench on oil their way to C camp I 1 m i p they were brought to tile the city hall examined next morning and committed to the pr probate 0 ba te court in bonds each the TI le mirie came day of the examination all an meer officer arrived from camp with an order demanding 1 thai mhd men be to tl the ic military oil on the plea pla pia that tile the arrests were made inside the boundary line lindof of the reservation and they tiley were given up on conditions condition that they would be held subject to any indictment that might be found against them by the grand jury of the probate court A few days daya afterwards they escaped from camp campy and nd the civil authorities have bave heard no moro more of them I 1 would here like ilke ta abb asb how is it that soldiers are perr pert permitted pitted to come to town from camp ca armed with deadly wea wen weapon weapons pons pops which 1 icil tell tb they OY frequently how an eager cager disposition to use we soldiers dave have frequently come down from camp in bands with the avowed intention or of raising a row and aa a they themselves bave have said of running the gag G d d rd d mormons cormons Mor mons and cleaning eRtling cl out the town fine conduct for those gallant boys in blue they have 1 made nade repeated threats of what they intended to do but they have don done e but a comparatively small portion of it yet I 1 will say h however however that I 1 discovered without the possibility of doubt that they were 1 incited 1 to this outrageous conduct by members or of a miserable political clique and that the indications were warp strongest during t the Cullom bill excitement i some somo time ago a couple copple of i sol diery on horseback rode tilro through u i ga the streets and aud ored fired shots promiscuously s at unoffending citizens and arid when they reached the extreme eastern portion of the tho city stopped several people and stuck their pistols in their faces A few months since a couple of these peaceful and gallant boys in ili blue stopped mr orson arnold on the street treet and endeavored to get his horse away from him I 1 might refer to many more instances shullar similar to the foregoing which however would take too much time and space and besides I 1 have no desire to do it those I 1 bavel have here given are sufficient howe however yer I 1 should think to cob convince anybody that the police officers in dealing with soldiers have the frequent option of knocking them down or having baving their own brains blown outi and the first a al ter nativa la is much the bet hest way for the officers officer with regard to the gentleness of disposition manifested by some of those inoffensive individual the vS dence cip in using the religious element in mans natum nature to break the power powen of tile the ro mish hierarchy 1 scholastic theology had succeeded the Bib leand the bible bibie was brought forth from the dusty shelves of monastic libraries to succeed scholastic theology but the rank growth grov gros th of errors left but irttie attle room for bible truth religious intolerance the fruitful source of political aggression is the heritage heri beri tago of therefore the reformed ed churches and tile tiie facts of history remind ui us that they have baye not ignored the means used by the thel mother chueh chuch church for the conversion conversion of heretics and he heathen atlen it is now sometimes i deemed more eco economical noi nor and politic to extend christian civilization by means of commerce monogamy and licentiousness if these do not convert barbarians they seldom fall fail to reduce their numbers the reformation was by no mea means ns a purely religious movement it transferred the direction of religious affairs airs from the pope to national rulers it used the mighty weapon of religion to institute a new order of thing not so much less aggressive in in their nature as broken and fragmentary in their power and therefore giving better opportunities for progress ess the gallant boys toys in blue I 1 might refer to the wholesale chicken chichen steal ing cases the frequent depletion of clothes lines the battering in of doors and windows with large rocks the breaking down of fences the robbing of orchards the molestation to of f women r omen and chii chil children dren dreg in the absence b of male members of families all of which operations are indulged in in the east part of the r city elty ity by the innocent soldiery should the of officers licer s of camp douglas want any further evidence odthe of the upright and dignified chir character acter of some sonic of the gallant boys in blue I 1 would refer them to the condition of the po post st guard goard home house which is reaching nearer home some time ago sigo 0 it was the tiie custom foi roe a patrol to come como d down own froin from camp and the officer in command of the squad would operate in con junction with the police the latter iatter aiding in ili getting the men together who should be placed under arrest and the patrol took them to camp this tills worked very tery well and saved the police h a great deal of risk of ilfe life and limb and if general mor row is that his men are arc maltreated mal inal treated by the police tile tiie se sending riding of a patrol would fully satisfy him bim whether they tiley are or are ard not if he lie is of opinion that men who get rebellious and belligerent under the influence of intoxicating liquor cant cann cart be easily handled it luc would be well weil for lim him jim to try the experiment and take some management of such affairs in a military capacity in conclusion it may be well for me to state that the instructions re received delved by the police come conic directly from myself and for which I 1 am despo responsible fusible choso |
