Readers, who responded by the hundreds Pearsons list ot the top 13 movies of all time. almost unanimously wrote on their own Top 13 ballots that Pearson's choices were absurd. However, when the ballots were tallied, eight ni Pearson's nominations dovetailed with the readers own lavorite movies. Miller's nominee) and the classic adventure "Beau Geste shared e honors with such dubious film achievements as "Macon County Line. "The Diary of Anne Frank received its first and only vote when the last ballot was counted. Probably more interesting than the ballots themselves were the personal comments otfered by readers who criticized Pearsons selections. One temale reader, sympathizing with Pearson lor expanding his "Top Ten" to 13 films, said she couldn't possibly narrow her list dowm to less than 60. She then listed all 60, throwing in a lew "honorable mentions" lor good measure. On the other hand, Pearson received a lew single-vot- e ballots. One of them was anonymous. "How could you lorget a movie like 'Miracle on 31th Street'?" it asked in capital letters. The 636 different movies which received votes varied with the imaginations of the film fans who nominated them. Ten "great movies were nominated "The Great Escape," "The Greatest Story Ever Told," The Great Caruso, "The Great Gatsby, "The Great Waldo Pepper, "The Great Race," "The Great American Cowboy, "The Greatest Show on Earth, "Great Expectations, "The Great Waltz." Arid a! least three "dirty" movies were nominated "Dirty Dingus Magee," "The Dirty Dozen." "D'rty Harry." In addition to naming their favorite bakers dozen movie titles, several voters named their 13 choices ol worsts. Nominees in this category included "Airport '75," "True Grit," "California Split," "Night Moves" and others. If a reader couldn't remember the title ot a favorite movie, that didn't stop him from "2001: (31) including the musical. Next on the list, "Gone With the Wind, received votes on 11 percent ot the baiiois. Also chosen as the reader's top films but not included on the movie critics list included "The Ten Commandments," "Ben liar," "Fiddler on the Ronl," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "Jaws." , Runners-uincluded "Funny Girl," "My "High Noon," "The African Queen." One reader voted tor "one with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr when they met on a voyage, he took her to meet his little old grandmother, etc , etc., and they were to meet on top ot the Empire State Building a year later." Does that puzzle you? The same reader also cast a vote for "the one where Audrey Hepburn lived over the garage with her father, (the chauffer), and was in love with Bill Holden but married Humphrey Bogart in the end. (The movies are "An Affair to Remember and "Sabrina.) The most common request of voters was that they select 13 lavorite films lor themselves, instead of just 10. "It Pearson gets 13. so do I," read one ballot. In compliance, readers were given 13 "top ten" Dims to compare with the venerable movie writer's choices. ' Much could be told about a reader's personality by looking at the votes he cast. One voter chose eight religious films of the 13 she nominated; another listed seven animal films among 10 choices. One youngster, David Wilson of Huntington, Emery County, let Pearson know just where the stood regarding movie industry. "Dear Guys, his letter read. "I go to movies an awiul lot, so 1 pretty well know about the movies. 1 plan to be a tamous actor like Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Robert Redlord and all the other big ones. So if anyone looks tor a kid who can act, who is six feet one inch, and can be very grown up i! he wants to, will you recommend me? Okay9 Thanks a lot " Although he mentioned an cnehj.cd ballot, no votes were lound in David's envelope from Huntington. The aspiring movie star evidently pul lirst things first.
