Show - Fire Destroys LDS tVi.'4 c44,41 Continued from page 3 honeymoon cottage of Brother and Sister Kline. They purchased the place in 1947 and later moved next door, renting out the honeymoon house. At approximately 6 a.m. on Nov. 24, flames roared the searing, out of the nearby canyon and threatened both structures. Brother Kline's tenants fled the scene. Brother Kline and two priesthood brethren of his ward, Milosh Benesh, a Czech immigrant, and Roger Platzek, a professional fireman, remained on the property and attempted to save the homes by keeping them wet with garden hoses. The heat became unbearable, and they retreated. Brother Kline never expected to see either of his homes again. Upon return to the scene, the honeymoon cottage was ashes. His present residence has a scorched roof, but was otherwise habitable. The home and ranch-typ- e outbuildings of Glenn W. Necessary, Tajunga Ward, were leveled by flames that raced through the secluded canyon in which his family lived. the family includes his wife Cindy and three children. La Crescenta Stake comprises seven wards and includes the cities of La Crescenta, Sun land, La Canada, Tujunga and parts of Glendale and Pasadena. At 5:55 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, the telephone in Pres. The home in which they live suffered malor heat damage, but wasn't destroyed. Ve-du- Living quarters were set up in the stake center to accommodate up to 150 evacuees. Forrest Pritchett, stake custodian, kept the roof of the stake center saturated with water throughout three days. Breakfast Monday morning was served to approximately 30 persons who left the area but later returned to their homes. Breakfast was a "casserole brigade," organized and coordinated by Georgetta Astle, Relief Society president, and Mary Consolo, Primary president. The bishops storehouse was contacted; its personnel responded immediately with food for lunch Monday and provisions for an extended evacuation period. Bishop David Robertson, Verdugo Hills Ward, described the bulk of the activity of his ward as "family to family." Ward members responded to the needs of their neighbors instinctively. They opened their homes to all who were in need. The Robertson home was threatened by flames but Bishop Robertson was able to save it through the use of garden hoses. To ;flake sure certain items would be saved in case the house burned, Bishop Robertson had a "rescue priority list" and the following items were removed from the home in this priority order: Family photographs, genealogy records, books of remembrance, family financial records, bishopric items, clo j 4 go thing, blankets, etc. He notes that, in his evaluation of priorities, all of the family's expensive pcssessions were left behind: Brother Stanley Jardine of the La Crescenta Ward saved his house by hosing it throughout the day. Brother Jardine also was responsible for saving homes of two neighbors by calling the fire department in the nick of time. Dennis Moffat, seventies group leader of the Verdugo Hills Ward, saved his and several other homes. However, the roof of his home was destroyed. The average homes in the La Crescenta Stake are in the $45,000 to $50,000 class. Many homes in the actual fire area are in the $75,000 bracket.
