Show PEACH DAY this year proved a success in many ways box elder commercial club lost money another peach day of immense ff proportion judged by the number of people present is a matter of history strangers began gathering as early as monday and by wednesday morning at daybreak things looked decidedly holiday like A goodly number came in on oil the malad valley train all and the cache valley but the great throng came from the south this tiala tiaia was expected at 10 but it was neater noon when it reached here 22 coaches long and loaded to the guards even standing or hanging room being at a premium the train left salt lake with ac 16 coaches loaded coaled down and picked up a hundred or two between there and 0 ogden den at ogden six more cars were picked up and another engine brought into use it was the longest passenger aral train that thal ever came this way the street decorations were the best brigham ever saw they were t as is fine as we ever saw anywhere for that matter and those who did the work are entitled to a lot of praise the bunting flags and banners were done under the supervision of amos barbon I darsson amos took a deal of interest in fit the work and did it well he and john burrows worked neatly neaily all the night before replacing bunting and flags that the wind tore oft off that display of lights in front of the court house was a work of art it was done under tinder the direction of mr truelson assisted by lawrence berg warren taylor and richard ti ansen it reflected both light fight and credit the display of peaches was fairly good it was real good considering the time ot of the year those elberta peaches are the mod most freakish 7 i thai A way of any fruit we have one cannot tell a month ahead how they are going to be that is it cannot be determined with accuracy just when they will be at their best that accounted lor for the in intel fellor bior display and partly tor for the poorer quality of peaches for distribution As to the poor quality of some of the peaches given away we have haic however something more to say but we liked the idea of placing the stands just where they were it seems to us to be the only proper place for them the stands looked well too and we feel to commend tile the city council and the mayor for their action in closing tile the as they did it was an act that the commercial club as well as the he thousands of visitors cannot fall fail to appreciate the judges appointed to award prizes for fruit displays sir mr hendershot of ogden professors northrup and titus ot of logan the prizes were won as follows ast 1st prize of the 33 gold trophy tor for the best five cases of elberta peaches was won by peter petersen of the 3rd ard ward and 2nd prize of 20 for the largest and best display of peaches of pea peaches clies george freeman the ball game was pretty good although we have seen better light here on the same diamond wellsville appeared to be outclassed right from the start Ho however weer in the ath innings the bountiful lads went all to pic pieces s and wellsville run in seven men tying the score during the rest reet of the game they failed to connect aith the home plate more than once while bountiful scored three more making the figures at the end 10 to 7 stoic did good work as umpire the recital by miss estelle jensen and mrs coles cole s and mr ellhu call in the opera house was pretty well tended but bot anything like as well as it descried des ened it was a theat a i tare inre musical feast the novelty stands were very much lit in evidence on the while picture shows held forth in the opera house and in the first national bank baal building there were a few features of the celebration that were not lot so pleasant principal among them being the really disgraceful fruit that sone sole unprincipled grower foisted upon tile hie commercial club the man who received the fruit declares aies that in fit two lots from men in whom lie he has always had the greatest confidence were sonie some ot of the worst peaches imaginable packed on tile the bottom of the box under a row of good looking fault no condemnation is too severe for such reprehensible conduct it works a twofold two fold hardship it is an to the club that was paying a rood oj round sum suin for good peaches and alen it gives out our town and our chief industry a severe setback set back citizens who happened to visit the he stands after those little scrubby peaches had been uncovered blushed with shame the object the club had in buying peaches outfight outi ight was to avoid such things as this we rather fanor the plan of asking for contributions ons 0 of peaches afler all the commissary department was faulty too brigham large enough to accommodate the large crowds that gather here on peach days without special preparation half of the visitors who wanted something to eat yesterday get it there were a number of minor details that not properly looked after but aie hardly worth mentioning here but it brings us to a point that we have urged the last two ears it is this A man who has had experience should be hired for a month preceding pie ceding the celebration to act as manager gilel duty should be to talie take care of all correspondence and oversee the work of all committees his time should be given wholly werk for where there Is a man yn in this town who in peach time can call give his time as required without making a great sacrifice it if any point that should have re attention is overlooked in this write up just put it down to lack ot of time on our part and let it go at that we must get out today finally at this writing it looks as it if the club had lost a mint of money on oil the deal their ex expenditure for peaches was enor enormous |
