He knows about proportions and how changing them will change the qualities of the concrete according to the requirements of a given job. He's also knowledgeable about additives that will make a mixture set like stone in two or three minutes or delay the set for two or three days or longer if desired. Other additives provide extraordinary wearing strength of skid-proqualities. Terry is also an expert on equipment and techniques for ' working with concrete. 'We have a lot of industrial customers who have special problems with concrete dairies, for instance. Did you know that milk 'eats' concrete? When milk is spilled on a concretes floor, it sours-anthe lactic acid reacts with the lime in the floor and ruins the surface," he ex- plained. The freeway overpasses are another example. The concrete on the overpasses deteriorates faster than the other freeway surfaces be- cause moisture freezes faster on the overpasses, Terry explained. This is due to the circulation of cold air under the as well as on top overpasses. A greater amount of salt has to be used on the over-passes to melt the ice and salt , - , : - -- of concrete's enemies. Not only is the en up concrete surface another is by salt but the underlying net 'of reinforcing steel is cor- roded.
