Even if you saw Cactus Flower in films, dont miss the stage version of the Abe Burrows comedy at the University of Utah. An enthusiastic capacity audience in the Pioneer Memorial Theater applauded the premiere performance Thursday night during the scenes as well as at the end of the play itself. Talented Jan Sterling, veteran of scores of movies, television shows and stage performances, led the splendid local cast from one high point to another as she exhibited the both sides cf a woman dowdy dentist's aide, and the woman who suddenly sheds the prim veneer to emerge as a glamorous butterfly. She is so unbelievably natural that it is difficult to real-ir- e she is cn the stage. There are no theatrics. She is up there on stage living her part. The lines and situations are hilarious themselves, but a talented cast is needed to give them timing, nuance and all the other features required to put over a comedy. And believe me, I think this cast plays the comedy with the understanding and light touch to put it over. The featured performers play their in Tower Slates 'Fantasia' Walt Disneys Fantasia, which now is making its last rounds before being withdrawn from exhibition for another .seven years, will open next at the Tower Theater. In color, music and sound, the production was years ahead of its time. The stereophonic sound of other works have only now come up to the standard Disney reached with Fantasia. The color is of special design and shows imagination that appeals to todays mod generation. The animation appeals to young and old alike. Disney extracted different moods from the music of Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Moussorg-sk- y, Tchaikovsky, Dukas and Stravinsky so he has sound that appeals to most tastes. He collaborated with Leopold Stokowski, who conducted the 103 musicians of the Philadelphia Symphony in the great music Disney had chosen. Some of the Fantasia characters, such as the hippos and the unicorns, have become familiar to millions of moviegoers. roles as effectively as the stars. There is Scottie Clark, television and radio personality in Salt Lake, who stepped the show on a couple of occasions with his deliberate clowning a cross between a Buddy Hackett and Shecky Greene. His drunk scene is a classic. Hes the friend who owes the dentist a lot of money. Elaine Vetterli as Mrs. Durant, the wealthy patient, adds many laughs with just her facial expressions, and John Buffington as Igor, the next-doo- r boy friend, is full of the nalvite and exberance the role reqires. Robert Antrim, as the Spanish ambassador, plays the part as straight caricature and has a laugh in every line. Two performers with the toughest roles are Duane Hill and Lynne Fisher. He play the dentist and Inevitably is compared with Walter Matthau, who played the film role. Despite a bit of nervousness, he puts a lot of laughs into the role. As usual, his timing is excellent, and he gets every bit of humor possible out of the lines. The dentist has a young girl friend, but invents a wife and three children because he doesnt want to get married. When he says hew much he hates liars and how he admires the November D7: 13, 1970 he stops integrity, show so the audience can catch up after laughter. M:ss Fisher will be compared with Goldie Hawn, won an Oscar as best support- SEAT ENGAGEMENT mzMZMEmimL 22 J3? ing actress in the film. In acting, she equals Miss Hawn because she is playing the part straight through withct takes or breaks. In looks, she beats Miss Hawn. She doesnt exaggerate the giddiness. She plays the funny lines with a twinkle. It was a pleasure to have her come back. Other members of the cast Include Wade Merrill and Karen Fugal. Ralph Margetts has directed Cactus Flower with a lilt that makes it a light and enjoyable production from the start to the finish of the 15 scenes. The gigantic set, which uses the whole stage and is one of the largest ever constructed in FMT, consists of three separate rooms, which appear through use of a revolving stage. Vem Adix was responsible for tills feature, while Greg Geilmann designed lighting. Cactus Flower will be presented nightly at 8 oclock through Nov. 21, with a matinee at 2 p.m. the final day.
