On April 13, two days after takeoff, an oxygen tank explosion crippled the spacecraft, 205,000 miles from earth. The moon landing was cancelled and the world waited anxiously for the April 17 splashdown which brought Swigert and his companions, James Lovell o W and Fred Haise, home safely. Swigert is one of five astronauts visiting 20 schools in the Touch Down USA program of the Robert A. Taft Institute of Government. The astronaut will meet with National Merit scholars from Arizona and Utah, local high school and U. student leaders, and members of Young Democrats and College Republicans. At 10:30 a.m., he will hold a press conference in Marriott Library auditorium and will attend a press luncheon. Swigert will join Dr. James C. Fletcher, U. president, for the football game. The astronaut will be honored during halftime activities.
