A branch of the Church was organized on Aug. 6. This first branch in England was followed by nine additional branches during the same year. 1852 Missionaries were Aug. 2, Salt Lake City called to serve in China at a special conference held in Salt Lake City. The elders designated to open the door for the Gospel in China were Hosea Stout, James Lewis and Chapman Duncan. They left the city Oct. 20, 1852. 1852 Construction of Aug. 3, Salt Lake City the protective wall which surrounds Temple Square was commenced on this date. The wall stands 13 feet high and was built of adobe bricks, plastered over with cement. The capping stones and base are of red sandstone. One hundred and twenty pilasters add strength and design to the wall which took five years to complete. Promised Valley ' Time Change original pioneers to enter the Salt Lake Valley with Brigham Young. Elder Benson served a mission to the British Isles from 1921 to 1923. Following his mission he was graduated from BYU and received his M.S. degree in agriculture at Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa. He served as agricultural agent in Idaho. Elder Benson was ordained to the Council of the Twelve by President Heber J. Grant on Oct. 7, 1943. He presided over the European Mission following World War II. In 1952, he was selected as Secretary of Agriculture in the Cabinet of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Elder Benson the Orient. now supervises the missions of 1902 The Bureau of InAug. 4, Salt Lake City formation located on Temple Square was opened on this date. The attractive building was built to accommodate the thousands of tourists estimated at that time to reach as many as 300,000 a. year. Guides were furnished and the public was admitted free. Elder Ezra Taft Aug. 4, Whitney, Idaho Benson was born n the small farming community on this date. His parents were early settlers in Idaho and he was the great grandson of Apostle Ezra T. B e n s o n. one of the On Aug. 2, in the presence of presidents Hilton A. Robertson of the Northern Far East Mission and Harold G. WEEK The starting time of Promised Valley, an epic production telling the story of the Mormon Pioneers, has been changed to 9 p.m. for August performances. During July, starting time was 9 :30 p.m. Promised Valley opened July 1 at the Temple View Theater across from the Salt Lake Temple and will be performed every night except Sundays through Aug. 29. New in the production this year, playing the male lead of Jed, is Gene M. Larson of California. The role is shared with Robert Peterson, Broadway singer, who recently returned to the Promised Valley stage after a San Diego triumph in Man of LaMancha.
