When A Child Is A Dropou- tAll too many boys and girls today drop out of school, with the obvious result that they not only dont get a good education, they also find it hard to get good jobs. Theres muen public concern about all this and lots of woik is being done in the high schools to reduce the number of dropouts. I suggest that high school is far too late to work on the dropout problem. As one of our North Haven school principals wisely pointed out, The dropout problem stars right down there in first grade with those unready boys. They begin schooi before theyre ready, and they soon learn to hate the whole thing. For such boys, failure leads to Increased failure and they quite sensibly drop out just as soon as they can. THE EVIDENCE Now new evidence suggests that- - the dropout problem starts long before first grade. In fact, it may start long before the child is bom. James Harmekng and Dr. Marshall B. Jones of the University of Florida, writing in the January 1968 issue of the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, have this to say. They report that when 39 dropouts from an high, school were matched with former classmates who stayed in school and who could be classified as slow learners, and normals, the average birth weight of the dropouts was lower than that of the slow learners. Sound strange? It really Isnt In fact, it makes a lot of sense. The reason for the finding appears to be that infants who are malnourished during pregnancy are, naturally, the ones who weigh least at time of birth. And malnourishment before birth can and often does lead to either prematurity, brain damage, or other growth-slowin- g processes. Any one of these factors may result in reduced intellectual competence or reduced all around ability after birth and right up through the high school years. scalp beauty for very little cost?
