Her blood was replaced with human blood of the same type, the hospital spokesman said. The chimps artery was then hooked up to the patients vein and vice versa, for a mutual interflow of blood. Purpose of the operation was to allow the chimpanzees liver to perform the functions of the child's liver with the hope that this respite would give the childs organ a chance to recover from Its hepatitic infection. Hepatitis is a virus infection that attacks the liver. It is a disease that is debilitating sometimes fatal. The child, a girl, lives in the Atlanta metropolitan area. She became ill in August and developed obvious hepatitis in September. She was admitted to Egleston last week with a hepatic relapse and became comotose several days ago.
