''! WEEK 'ENDING OCTOBER, Explaining why people use drugs. Dr. Bennion states: Drug abuse is encouraged by socially irresponsible persons concerned only with their own economic gain. Young people turn to drug use because adults, whom they admire, and aspire to emulate parents, entertainers, athletes, the serve as models for them. Peer pressure is another reason, as are the desire to escape from reality, and because drugs represent a symbol of rebellion. Drugs have a legitimate place in human life, and in the hands of competent physicians of Sound judgment they are a blessing to mankind. Hut when they are taken without medical direction and for reasons other than medical need, they become both dangerous to and destructive of life. For this reason it is wisdom to leave operetta, iday season, the popular one-a"Amahl and the Night Visitors, will be performed again, and the Salt Lake Oratorio Society plahs to present its traditional performance of Handel's Messiah as pat of the holiday season activities. ct well-to-d- o them alone. In addition, he added, Drugs are not good or bad in and of themselves, but they become either one or the other as they build or destroy persons, as they promote or impede life. Drug abuse can take many forms, writes Dr. Bennion. Any drug (one that has not been prescribed by a physician) is likely to lead to abuse, because it is usually taken in defiance, ignorance, or with a bias. Without knowledge of biochemistry and mental processes, it is hazardous to use drugs, he warns.
