now for ar af pf paie pale 16 J at the DESERET OMM office con C ninety five letters written by members of the tha pary party which left this city in the winter of 1872 under the guidance of the late Preal president dent george A smith on a mission to palestine a mission undertaken for the purpose of consecrating se the holy land prepa preparatory ra to te vie gathering home of the 4 long scattered remnants of israel one of the main features connected with the tho great latter day work of god gene generally rilly called mormonism the letters now published were written in part by the late president george A smith also by president lorenzo snow of brigham city and by miss misa E B R snow and elder eider paul A of S salt sait alt ait laue lake L 3 ke city y they abound with descriptions description 0 of f the sights eights and see scenes es witnessed by the party in the various countries visited from the time of leaving until their return to salt lake city and when it is remembered that the members of the palestine mission visited england france holland belgium austria italy various states of germany arabia syria and palestine giving graphic word paintings of the most famous places on their route and of or tile the moral and social condition of the people of the various countries and localities in which they so journea jour ned it must be acknowledged that the field from which the materials forming the subjects of the present volume were selected was vast and in the hands of parties of well known talent and ability such as most of the authors of palestine correspondence correspondences it is reasonable to expect a work of far more than ordinary attraction and such after a careful peru perusal sad we unhesitating unhesitatingly 9 pronounce the present volume many of the letters and especially those of president snow being written in a very charming style and brimful of information related in an intensely interesting man ner A few letters at ae th e commencement of the volume are occupied with descriptions of the trip from salt lake city to new york calling en route at various places including washington where an interview was had bad with president grant and visits made to the several departments of the government etc the voyage and experience of the party across the atlantic their art ival on the irish coast and the trip to liverpool are then described while in liverpool some of t the he members of the mission visited the workhouse in that city a model institution ution of ef its kind a minute description of the building and of its inmates and management forming by no means the least interesting chapter of the correspondence from liverpool they proceeded to the worlds metropolis london and spent a few days in visiting the principal points of interest therein including the tower brit ish museum crystal palace and many other noted places and objects including the albert B memorial emo ra 1 erected by the people of bri britain tain in honor of f the late prince albert husband of queen victoria this monument is said to be the grandest in the world and a most elaborate description of its marvels and beauties by president snow will excite the wonder and admiration of all readers at london the party embarked nor for holland i and they furnish a graphic and striking account of the hague and other principal cities of that country as well as of its navy commerce manufactures colonial and home government governments arid and the domestic customs and condition of 0 the people also a very brief sketch of their heroic struggle for independence with the spaniards in the century and of their continued battles and the method of conducting them with old ocean in rescuing land enough for themselves to live descriptions which will delight the intelligent reader after leaving italy the party proceeded to corfu and thence took passage for alexandria egypt and abd now they cross the dividing line separating the nations of europe from those of the orient and henceforth their descriptive scenes scenes are of a more io mantle mantie if not of a more moie interesting character to the reader in far america in alexandria they find a population of a strange and notley character con consisting principally of turks greeks arabs syrians copts coats ar at trien ians iaus Nu nubians Nub blaus plaus ians lans ac with the dress dresa and language of their several countries presenting sights and sounds inconceivable to the un travelled european and american from alexandria our travellers trav ellers wend their way to cairo where they visit the gardens of thekle the khedive also the va mosques and other places of Inte interest iest lest after which they make trips to the pyramids the sphinx Cleo patras needles pompous Pamp Pomp pillar the catacombs Cata combs city of Helio neilo polla polia temple of on fountain of the sun laud land of goshen and other mementoes and localities famous yn in the days of the pharaohs Phara all of which are described and sketches given of the manners customs religions and social condition of the people of modern egypt leaving cairo the party travelled to ismalia whence they proceeded via ahe the suez canal to port fort said and from the latter place to jaffa the scriptural joppa the place of debarkation in the holy land t he the grand ob objective point polut of the journey jaffa la Is said to bo be the most ancient seaport in the world and the arrival and landing of the mission at that place their visit to the house of one simon a tanner mentioned in the scriptures the arrangements for and commencement of camp life and of the journey to jerusalem are all minutely detailed greatly augmenting tile the interest felt by the reader if he be be a bible as well as to the descendants of abraham Isaa cand jacob graphic delineations of this ancient and famous city are given by various members of the party as also of the holy places contained within the
