dreamland to the stern realities of everyday ilfe life our procession was not a success but tho the elements were to blame not our lack of enthusiasm at the appointed time 10 a am in our meeting house houfe was crowded to excess to listen to the proceedings edin 9 s after prayer by the chaplain bro bra robert baxter and aud mu music nic b by Y the band and choir the orator of the day father timothy parkinson Par kinson binson recited the trials and of the saints in entering these valleys the time was pleasantly spent by the people with short speeches songs toasts ac we were very much pleased to have the pleasure of listening to a short speech from bishop vm wm H maughan who has just arrived home homo after fourteen months mission in the bid ald irold country the afternoon proved a source of to young con gre gregat gating ingon on the public square and joining in the rustic sports till pleasant laughter re echoed again and again in the evening terpsichore was patronized extensively until lna in a very happy and appropriate prop manner early in the morning the people were awakened from their slumber blumber by the sweet strains of music by the brassard bras brass sand and martial bands as they were serenading sere through the principal streets of the city As we looked towards tho the public square W we noticed the stars and stripes lin tin unfurled furled to the gentle breeze from the lup lop of the liberty people at nine am the people commenced to gather at the bowery which under the direction of or our lively and untiring bishop john B mal mat ben assisted by J C R and others had been very neatly and tastefully decorated deeo deco for the occasion on account of the somewhat unfavorable prospect of the weather the procession was dispensed with at 10 am arn tha meeting was called to order by geo E bench esq marshal of the tho day eleven young ladle ladles with suitable mottoes represented the hiate of or deseret and su surrounding territories the pioneers to salt lake bake valley the pioneers lo 10 manti mann the tue mormon battalion the belief relief society the young ladies retrenchment association the you young mens mutual improvement As association the sunday school teachers and children of manti mantl were all well and appropriately represented anted and seated in order by the marshal after music by the bands singing by tho manti mantl and sunday school choir choirs rand ind prayer by the chaplain a very impressive and eloquent address was delivered by wm T reio orator of the day followed by appropriate prop ate ato and instructive remarks remark toasts arid and sentiments by Aless rs caf Car castoe stoe geo P billings albert smith and others interspersed with music and minging singing one thing deserving luerl mention tion wa iras an oyt oTt original ginal poem abiell certainly did much credit to the th 8 author johne johnk reid while ba bishop shop maiben was making somo some closing remark remarks a rain storm came on and not having time to close in order the meeting was dismissed by three cheers for the brave pioneers of utah and for the peace and prosper sity of the union at 2 pm tilo the people reassembled at the bowery where the juveniles engaged in a dance until 5 pm after which followed foot sack and wheelbarrow races and other sports and amusements all of which the children seemed to enjoy very much judging from the spirit and energy with which they engaged in it but what raised the joyfulness of the children and young people almost to enthusiasm was the sight eight of the forty chinese lanterns an which illuminated the bowery juring during the evening and our beautiful little display of fireworks which had been procured for the occasion from prof 0 F due of salt lake city and was very successfully cess fully operated by luther T tuttle esq and assi aasi assistants stants this was something new in the history of manti mantl and seemed to be very much appreciated and enjoyed by both the fireworks celebrated here by the citizens of this place in a very spirited manner although the weather was unfavorable to our arrangements in the early part of the day which compelled us to change or alter our pro gramme at an early hour were fired by the infantry in honor of the day A fine new national flag nag was hoisted and a of ot thirty seven guns was fired by the infantry in honor of the flag at 10 a m mi the citizens met at the bowery where we enjoyed ourselves hugely in listening to J jubilee jubliee ubi lee iee songs by tb juvenile the e j u venile cb choir oar which interspersed the morning exercises which consisted of prayer oration speeches a poetical address by a young lady toasts sentiments ti etc in the afternoon the weather being favorable we formed a grand procession of fathers and mothers in israel zions fair daughters and sabbath and day school children and the military consisting of in 1 fantry and cavalry each company bearing its appropriate banners and flags the martial listened to with marked attention the testimony of the three and eight witnesses to the book of mormon and also par 3 page of the same were read by ga 0 hampshire A eulogy on president brigham young by D candland delivered iu in his usual eloquent style brought a great many scenes of the past fresh to the memory of the people as well weil as many of the teachings and counsels of our beloved returned from mexico was next called upon and gave us a very interesting sketch of his travels in that country and his experience pel pei peri perl ienco lence ence enco among the Lama bama he spoke bishop WS beely seely toasts benti ments etc during the exercises the thu speeches and reading were interspersed with pongs and music from our excellent choir and brass band under their energetic and profi clent leader prof J hasler one feature of this celebration which attracted much attention was wast the work of our re relief belief I 1 I 1 etSo society clety who under the direct direction loh lon of their highly esteemed president mrs on together with her counselors mrs christino christine peel and mrs madsen had fitted dp up a frame building adjoining the bowery where was seen quite a i variety of work from irom their hands while a number of those good ladies who are always on band hand to seek peek after the poor in our midst and to administer to their wants were here spinning carding sew ing according Ac to their dur dbr different orent callings at 4 p m a free dance danco was given to the children A social party for the older folks at 8 in Jes sons hall closed the
