Show Student Life Wednesday March 29 1978 Page 7 Nutribird says eat healthy food by Kim Clawson for Student Life Nutribird the symbol of the American Dietitian Association came to life at USU prior to spring break through the efforts of the Nutrition and Food Sciences Department Logan’s second feathered mascot is meant to encourage the community to eat properly Cindy Brinn and Joan Davis of the department “were inspired by the success of the KVNU Chicken to turn the national logo d into a character” Brinn said “We saw the attention the chicken was having at the games and decided to do somefull-size- thing like that” Wearing this years’ national slogan on its backfeathers “Eat a Balanced Diet Everyday” Nutribird is the only one like it in the country Davis said “We hope to take it with us to the next ADA National Convention in New Orleans which will be Sept 9 of this year” Carol Funk one of the eight medical dietitic majors in the department said “We are using the bird to do skits dealing with feeding problems at senior citizen centers such as with those who don’t want to cook and those with dentures who find it hard to eat Nutrition advice is also given to those with weight problems economic problems and those who are occassionlly consti- students information on proper nutrition and new food ideas Nutribird gives some tips on nutrition: — For iron deficiency eat food high in iron like red meats whole grains and eggs — For lack of calcium eat yogurt ice cream milk and cheese — For lack of vitatmin A which aides clear skin and good eyesight eat dark green vegetables like spinach and broccoli and orange or yellow squashes — And if low in vitamin C eat citrus fruits potatoes tomatoes cabbage and broccoli The funding for the medical dietitan program at USU has come from the Kellogg Foundation which donated S2500 for last year and this year's study under the “Kellogg Quality of Rural Life” program Dr Bonita Wyse director of the Medical Dietetic Program at Utah State says this is a professional program where only 10 students are accepted each year The four year course normally five years elsewhere includes a 16 week internship of clinical experience Nutribird will be in the UC basement during Health Week April 5 and the nutrition department plans to get the bird involved in more university functions possibly along with the KVNU Chicken during games What does the chicken have to pated” The department also plans to say? “I’m amazed I may have to visit schools in Cache Valley with talk to my lawyer but if she’s film strips and slides to give cute then it’s OK” he said 25-2- i KVNU Chicken gets competition version of Nutribird the American Dietitian Association logo has been created by the Nutrition and Food Science Department Nutribird will be in the UC basement during Health Week April 4 to 5 A d The 4-- Prisoner" CL e °° c "Cf lin Tom coleu aan and jo enqiana °°c fo For" "I'de Really Love To See You Tonight" "Westward Wind" "It s Sad To Belong" St0y ' ©oif’t iqiss the beautiful iqusic of the Utalf Synjpljoiiy Orchestra fri March 31 8:00 EAC WEE Sat April 3rd Spectrum $4 $5 $6 |
