Show October 22 1975 Page 10 Seals and Crofts perforn by Sue Hodgson Those of you who were at the Seals and Crofts concert Friday night don’t need to read on All I have to say is that it was great and you already know that Everybody was happy Friday night: nobody got decapitated by low flying frisbees the high schoolers who hogged the first 20 rows (is that fair?) didn’t get sprayed by snot during Seal’s nose solo the sound crew didn’t blow out any ears with feedback and the show got started on time (almost) Happiest of all is Buzz Thurber because the Cultural Committee actually made a profit on the show amounting to about $2500 You may be assured that none of it goes into their personal pockets “Little” Danny Deardorff opened the show with some mellow rock tunes Danny a polio victim at 16 months and partially paralyzed was carried to the stage on a couch from which he played his mandolin from a prone position With Seals and Crofts’ band playing behind him he gave an excellent performance and was called back for an encore He was accompanied for the final tune by Jimmy Seals on sax Some of his songs sounded alike but they were delivered with a lot of feeling Though crippled Danny is living life with gusto and is obviously enjoying it without playing the martyr He is married and has his own child At 23 he seems to have the world by the tail or at least he has his head in the right place and a very positive attitude And he can play one helluva harmonica! Seals and Crofts gave an exceptional show one of the best I’ve seen in the Spectrum They are not only fine musicians but good performers who know how to draw their audience into their work Such a combination of talent and personality is rare Dash Crofts came up with some amazing sounds on his electric mandolin including the blues and excellent Spectrum show in did a fine job on the drums during one number Seals however was the superior performer musically He was professional on each of equally three instruments: accoustical guitar fiddle and sax Crofts started the concert standing before the mike in a mellow mood He finished the show on his back with his legs flailing in the air Seals maintained throughout The duo did a few of their better known songs (“Humming Bird” “Diamond Girl” “I’ll Play for You” “We May Never Pass This Way Again”) between other sets and threw in some hillariously corny skits They did a Smothers Brothers routine (they both came off like Tommy) and Seals did a nose solo playing (you guessed it) his nose To give their fantastic back up band a break they did an instrumental “Wisdom” with a rousing Crofts solo on drums and Seals’ on sax -- Dash Crofts joined with Jimmy Seals to give the concert crowd its pleasure Balance your budget!
