Show EDITORIAL PAGE Continued work for students During the past few weeks much has been written concerning my involvement with Rocky Mountain Music Until now have refrained from responding to the numerous articles and letters Because am afraid I I that they adverse comments might affect the at- - tendance at the concerts and forums feel it necessary1 at this time to give my impressions of the situation and appeal to the studentbody to support the programs already on the schedule For an many years as can remember I have been assocated with the popular entertainment and the current music scene For this reason consider myself well informed in this area and have for a number of years considered choosing as a vocation in the promotion of popular and fine arts groups In an attempt to begin that professional career formed this summer the Rocky Mountain Music Incorporated which intended to promote groups for concerts and dances in the Intermountain area One of the main purposes of the organization was to locate and promote local groups such as Thunderbuck Ram and Kelly Shulberg whom consider to be equally talented with many of the performers we bring to USU from the West Coast One of the needs of a new agency is to list a number of groups it has helped to book That allows the agency to expand and develop must admit that became overly anxious when the decision was made to use the agency to book Riche Lecea Rockin Horse and Thunderbuck Ram felt in my own mind that this would be acceptable since was actually booking them for less money than other schools had paid for the same group For example Riche Lecea cost Snow College $750 he performed to a capacity crowd at USU for $600 This may sound like am trying to justify what now know to be a mistake am now aware that even though intentions were my good in saving money and promoting local groups it was inappropriate to use my company to do it When I began to see the full impact of this decision I immediately dissolved my partnership should say that my involvement has not cost the students any money Also did not benefit financially in any significant way in my efforts to promote these groups am upset with the fact that my actions have reflected wish to acknowledge that upon the Executive Council in no they are way involved and have in no way tried to me from the criticisms have received The protect facts have all been published There is nothing more to uncover But am still asking Nolan Johnson to form a committee composed of students who do not participate in student government to investigate fully all the information that has already been published and all other aspects of the case that still may be unclear Ivam confident that this will totally clear the executive Council of any involvement and will verify all the information that has come to light have promised already the Executive Council and members of the studentbody that will in the future not involve myself in any promotional activities that will benefit me personally have spent many hours in an I effort to bring to the campus many fine arts movies lectures forums and pops concerts It has been most difficult since this began to concentrate on that effort It is my hope that we may bring this situation to rest so as to get on with the assignment that have been given Again apologize for the controversy recognize that offered bad judgement on my part The mistake has not cost the students to suffer financially in any way only ask that be given the chance to move forward with the programs already scheduled and pledge to you every effort to bring excellent concerts and forums to the campus I I I I I I I Buzz Thurber Cultural VP I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Highriser-b- y Ray Cornia With last Friday's Seals and Crofts concert another situation arose in the operation of Buzz Thurber's Cultural sideration V-- P office that may warrant some con- But with the apparent majority of the studentbody apathetic towards prior complaints against Thurber for his conflict of interest with concert bookings who cares? But this is a different matter completely alike were Many persons students and greeted with ticket prices of $5 and $6 respectively when they went to purchase tickets the day of the concert either at the USU Ticket Office or the Spectrum door Many couldn't understand this sudden increase in prices after the show had been advertised in Student Life for a straight $4 Several students complained of the increase in ticket prices but to no avail This action by the cultural office is a clear cut case of false advertising according to the opinion of a Salt Lake lawyer But so what who's going to bitch over a buck anyway? But it wasn't just a dollar According to the ticekt sales report issued by the ticket office after the concert 208 students bought tickets on the day of the concert and did the same for a total of 630 dollars 422 it just happened once hell But what the But then who's to say it won't happen again? The problem in correcting such a matter is that the only recourse that can be taken that seems to take any affect is legal actfon'which would cost an estimated $2500 a sum to large for any student to handle 3ut why not fake it before the Executive Council or the non-studen- non-studen- ts ts administration? Why? Well they didn't do anything more before than slap Thurber on the wrist and say "Sorry Buzz" as if they were out of place even reprimanding him Before Thurber's actions did not cause any financial harm to anyone But this time it stung 630 people And it may happen again if it isn't corrected now Those students who complained after leaving the ticket office Friday and those who were heard com- plaining at the door that night say something and make themselves heard maybe something can be Gone For the cost of a dime you can send to the Utah State Attorney General's office and request a complaint form from the Consumer Protection Division and they will investigate the matter The more complaints maybe the more attention it will receive from the Attorney General But if no one does nothing it may happen again and again Those dollars add up But who cares?
