I realize it wasn’t been some very fine cooperation everyone There were a few people who waited till inamong all groups termission and went outside to Unfortunately Mr Morgan loses his objectivity when he light up Aside from the fact that many refers to Mr Brady myself and were unable to breath I wonder if others as having already convinced ourselves “that LDS anyone realizes the mess that and was made in the Fine Arts are people bigots Center? I went to work Saturday unresponsive and unfriendly” morning and could barely move I wonder if Mr Morgan (and I ihtend to spell his name through the auditorium due to various debris such as paper correctly) has ever considered that we write in Student Life with wrappers food bottles cans not a recognition that nearly all to mention quite a few cigarette the students are in fact very butts As mucha as I believe to who students have and right ? I responsive and have certainly found that to be what they want to hear I also think we could be a lot more the case courteous and responsible I I must admit I am rather be surprised if the FAC wouldn’t bewildered about your proposal were never again used for a to ignore the (often unwarranted) attack I believe that many of the Concert of that type its never abused again young people of the LDS Church' was nkeit Friday night Whether will disagree with your imthe usual Fine Arts you enjoy plication that criticism will only concerts or not you must admit weaken the Church and its who have attened) that (those members Strength comes from messes like that are rarely made imcriticism and from a Symphony during provements based on rational Kristie Thornton suggestions n Isn’t it ironic that a studentbody president Questionable priorities finds it convenient to ignore the Editor Student Life: dissident minority? This service is directred at you dormitory livers The local businessmen are picking up the tab If the FREE service is utilized the present schedule will be increased from weekend runs to weekdays too As it appears right now we may altogether lose the Blue Goose and her services because so few students have demonstrated their interest and need for transportation between campus and downtown Last year the shuttle bus cost 25 cents and had passengers enough This year the bus is strictly FREEBEES and has next to zero riders So if you wish to have the Goose then take a FREE ride this weekend Schedules are all over your dorms and in the UC If not — no more Goose Bus RA VanDrimmelen 528-76-74- 10 inhalation Friday nights concert including athletic schedules cultural schedules and perhaps most important the student listings As everything else the Blue Book will cost more this year However unlike many other things the guality has also gone up (Personal judgement) It will cost one dollar and honestly we are not ripping off the student! In fact it cost us well over one dollar to have it printed! So essentially you are getting it for less than cost We Blue Key Honorary Fraternity publish the Blue Book annually as a student service and I hope the students will take advantage of it It will be on sale soon and it may be purchased at the University Center basement or from a member of the Blue Key Honorary Fraternity I would like to sincerely thank the members of Blue Key for their support and interest I would also like to express my appreciation to all others who have contributed and had to put up with me I hope you will support us by buying the Blue Book and also patronize the advertisers who helped make this publication possible Jerry Hong Blue Book HEHT -A- TF $9 50 MONTHLY Free installation and delivery PHONE: 2 Call Anytime CACTUS CLUB MON NIGHT Enjoy fireplace and good spaghetti SOKES BROTHERS Hours 10 - 5:30 Sat 10 - 4 pm Co-Edit- or 529-70-95- 05 2S&&0-934- 2 752-643- Not closed To USU Students: In case you are not aware (and few of you have reason to be) the university is NOT closed on Wednesday November 27 1974 No classes are held and few faculty members will find it necessary to visit their offices But those of you who may happen to visit the campus on that day WILL BE HAPPY TO KNOW that the secretaries on campus are required to open their offices all day to all of you who may need their services Please visit a secretary on campus on Wednesday I’d hate to think the energy used for heatng the entire university was spent (wasted?) on us secretaries You will also be happy to know that the same secretaries will be available to serve you on December 23 27 and 30 Check your calendar — these days are so near holidays that you may not be aware services of secretaries library people and others are available to you then Oh and students — Happy Holidays! Rip off? Editor Student Life: “Eull Gibbons never stops giving to charity last week he walked into a San Francisco Hospital and rolled up his sleeve and donated a pint of sap!” Seriously Dave Hirschi and I have donated a tremendous amount of time in preparing the Blue Book for this year I urge the students to purchase the Blue Book since it contains information useful to most students 516-66-26- 90 FAC Mess Editor Student Life: More than likely at the same time this letter is printed there will be something in the paper about how great the Fleetwood Mac concert was Fri night So it was to many people I guess I enjoy all kinds of Music thats why I attended the concert The fact that my date and I left during intermission has little to do with whether we were enjoying the concert or not We simply didn’t wish to die of smoke jtftQis pm ! Sign my name? I’d love to but I need the job Festival benefits Editor Student Life: I noted in your editorial regarding the University’s the summer’s American West Festival that considerable emphasis was placed on how funds for the Festival could be better applied elsewhere on campus Certainly I agree that the areas mentioned in your editorial — and many others not mentioned — are deserving of additional support However the Festival’s funbe it ever ding — should be not eliminated — would of of the sponsorship available for other purposes it exists primarily on receipts from tickets and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Utah Institute of Fine Arts grants earmarked for the Festival alone and for no other purpose and from donations from people interested in the project The university’s sole contribution is the use of people from the physical plant department who erect the pageant stage and since cfctfps the tents for the crafts fair It should be noted that the university benefits from the festival in a substantial number of ways First it provided summer employment last year for 38 students and staff and several of the students told me that they would not have been able to attend the university this fall had it not been for the money they earned working for the Festival Other jobs such as in the cafeteria are available to students because of the guests who come to the campus for the Festival and who need to be Second many of the items which the Festival purchased out of its receipts are now available for use by other campus organizations and departments Lighting equipment for example is used by the student productions department a multi-medi- a programmer is now the d property of the instructional media department the music department has some new trumpets etc Third the pageant requires a cast of nearly 200 people and every summer student who tried out for the cast was given a part— vastly expanding the summer outlet for students interested in drama and music Fourth the publicity engendered by the pageant on a nationwide basis has added yet another dimension to the public’s image of Utah State University and earned support for the institution in new areas For example because of interest in dance which the Festival promoted a summer dance program was spawned at USU with more than 200 students enrolled one of the largest of the various offerings last summer came from The students States as United the throughout well as from Utah to take the courses So the Festival could be eliminated as your editorial suggest Unfortunately so would the student jobs the materials which the Festival purchases and which are used throughout the campus and the opportunity for students who enjoy performing And in the process there would be no additional money available for other University programs The Festival is a bargain to the University Gerald R Sherratt Chairman Festival oithe American West |
