relations are some areas that Kerr works with problem growing in Cache County Utah by Steve Watkins for Student Life “Remeber even nice people ’t VD” Sally Struthers of “All in the Family” fame ended a public information commercial concerning venereal disease with that line In American today VD’ is the most widespred of communicable diseases There are an estimated 625000 reported cases of VD However some experts say the real number is over 2 million At present one person in five with gonorrhea is under 20 The rate among 15 to 19 age group is rising faster than any other group and55 percent of all reported case’s "’of V!D occur in persons under 25 In Utah the statistics hold true to the national trend says Mrs Imogene Marston Cache County Health Department nurse “In the years I have worked for the department I have noticed a steady increase disease in this of area” veneral she said There were 156 new cases of syphillis in Utah in 1973 one new case in Cache Valley Of 1756 reported cases of gonorrhea 18 of those were from Cache Valley “That number is incorrect” Mrs Marston said “I saw many more cases than that and I don’t know where the state came up with that number” The exact number of cases from Cache Valley is not known But according to Mrs Marston it is up 10 percent over last year Because gonorrhea is most prevelant in the under 25 age group Mrs Marston feels more education is needed ‘In Cache Valley Logan School District is further ahead than the Cache District It just depends on the administrator Parents won’t tell their kids about veneral disease and they don’t want other "people to either” she said “It’s a vicious circle” popular belief Contrary don’t carry that with VD people certain dirty look “The general 'public thinks people with gonorrhea have a certain look or live on the wrong to side of town This is not true” Mrs Marston said She said an area’s attitude or religious persuasion has nothing to do with this misconception “People in every city like to think venereal disease isn’t around them” she said The 15 to 19 age groups are being most heavily affected by VD Many are afraid to go for treatment because of inevitable parental punishment and general embarrassment Mrs Marston says that if a minor shows positive on his test she treats him and does not call his parents at all “When I interview a person I ask them who they are living roommates with parents whoever I tell them if I have to call them for information I will” she said “Whoever answers doesn’t need to know the reason for the call” Venereal disease may be an epidemic to some authorities but with proper treatment it can be brought under control Mrs Marston said she is working toward that goal “We are a free state supported office and are here to help anyone who needs it” the Health Department nurse said complaint to the university is an example of one of the problems that deal with directly" Kerr said I “All bulldozers should be abandoned if not
