Logan merchants are hip Logan merchants have disproved the theory that Utahns are at least five years behind the times They're really into the current nostalgia trend and it was quite evident at the first meeting between USU officials and local merchants Wednesday's gathering seemed more like a high school reunion than a constructive effort to propose practical solutions to a common college town problem The old timers had a grand time recalling the grievances of the past (despite Chairman Boyd Christianson's plea that they not do that) And what fun it was to wistfully remember the good old days when AC was such a great neighbor (despite the fact that AC was renamed USU nearly 20 years ago) Paul Harris owner of Unique Printing claimed that he has been working for 10 years to get such a meeting underway Apparently all he accomplished in 10 years was a long list of unfair campus competition including computer service food service photo services printing beef flowers housing vending records clothing catering book binding Xerox jewelry cosmetics arts and crafts movies sporting goods appliances candy fruit TV and radio ice cream milk cheese bowling and typing services Perhaps spurred on originally by Harris' bold claims on paper but let down Wednesday by his senseless arguments his respectably business suited delegation did little more than sit and applaud but evidently the signals got mixed up because they kept applauding the "Basically our ccwpamys goals Are to make am inferior product CHEAPLY" AND SELL IT TO FOOLS AT EXORBITANT PRICES £ COLLEGE MEDIA SERVICES-BO- J! " CA 94709 -- opposing views Most of those who were'brave enough to speak up had much praise for the University and admonitions for the local men George Everton the only merchant to point out that USU does many services for the community got a round of applause with his suggestion "Let's not bite the hand that feeds us" Everton's printing business is successful and he attributes it partly to the fact that they did not build their business by depending on the University Perhaps he was hoping to teach Mr Harris something Boyd Christensen in contrast' to Harris should be commended for having come to the meeting prepared From-c- h of Harris' 27 alleged unfair competors Christensen had a representative to explain USU's position And each of these men was prepared with concrete facts Guy Cardon owner of the recently closed Bluebird said it all when he said "There's no way to make people do business with you You have to earn their support" Our right to speak Much commotion seems to have been raised over Monday's editorial on Christian missionaries In today's issue student letters condemn the editorfa1as being biased worthless prejudiced and downright incorrect Well it's not It is an opinion whose basic foundation is hardcore fact and sometimes sickening observation But that is almost beside the point Many people wrote letters to the editor demanding that this kind of editorial stop It won't Probably since the first Student Life came out the paper has been used as a vehicle for social status It won't be this year This year we at Student Life are trying to start a new precedeiwfeWe're going to try to give the unheard a both ethnical and voice give the minority philosophical the voice they are guaranteed in the United States Constitution We will also give the majority culture space in the newspaper but we will not solicit it They have their own newspaper the Sage in which to convey their cultural propaganda To those who violently disagree with our editorials keep those letters coming in In your hatred for differing viewpoints you will help us to stimulate ideological discussion and possibly break down some of the restrictive norms that seem to choke off liberal thinking at this university It is time to bring some of the "sacred cows" out into the light It is time to do some serious thinking about the educational and philosophical directions of this university And we at Student Life pledge to the students of this school that we will do what we can to uphold the idealism of freedom of speech for all peoples whether or not they agree with the majority |
