Respect and Control” Roldo Robinson Editor Student Life Business Administration-M- 529-68-71- 28 I wrote a letter last week on “Police Respect and Control” which I feel is very important in our lives today I guess you don’t have any respect for others or you would have commented on the subject Police respect is not given by many people in the United States today They are quite often referred to as “Fuzz Pigs” etc by the public when they are only doing the job they swore they would uphold On police control I believe that tlfe potire 'Should be given more control in some situations Referring to riots as one example the police go through a lot of punishment in a riot some get beat up rocks thrown at them somebody spits in their faces and other things A situation that happened about a month ago downexico was a good example They hd a riot which was getting out of control So the police setup a machine gun in the street then the Police Chief announced over the intercom that if the streets weren’t cleared in 5 minutes they would commence firing Well as it came out there was almost 200 people laying in the street dead This example should be used in the United States when they have a riot that is out of control I think that quite a few people would stop and think twice before joining a riot People don’t have to join in riots to get something done they can find a way to solve the problem I would like some comments from you or anyone else on this topic of “Police ting K LDS faith This of course does not go to say that there is not obesity among peoples of other FRANKLY SPEAKING by phil frank faiths think that Mr Zollinger and those individuals who share his the viewpoint should situation and realize that while they are free to practice what they believe in they should accord others the same respect Linda Warren I Re-exami- ne Editor Student Life: Let me say that I do not deny the fact that there are those among us who do put the Mormons down But since the Mormons are a religious body they are subject to the criticisms of other peoples and religious bodies particularly those who are in disagreement with Mormon doctrine and practice I am a part of a religious body which has been persecuted for 4000 years I think the crux of this matter lies in the fact that many of us do not agree with Mormon practices particularly from a moralistic standpont and we therefore resent having them non-Mormo- ns enforced upon us If we would like to buy beer on Sunday we should be able to If we choose to terminate what could become an emotional disaster or a financial burden we shouldn’t have to travel 800 miles to California to do it If we choose to smoke or drink we should not have to answer to the Mormons for it We do not try to force them into breaking their moral code of ethics so by the same token they should not impose their rule upon us Granted the prohibitions against smoking and excessive drinking are health good measure But it is also in the interest of good health to keep off excess weight yet I am appalled by the number of over-weig- ht even obese people who are of the ne 528-64-26- 23 f Help for vets Editor A few veterans attending have formed an SU organization to help other veterans on campus Just what U- kind of help we provide depends a lot on what you would like done The aims and goals of the organization have not been we completely determined would like suggestions from other veterans as to what you would like us to do for you One thing that has been suggested is that we help veterans in trying to deal with the V- A As you probably know this can be a ceaLhassle If you can’t get a straight answer to a question or things aren’t going so well between you and the VA then maybe you can help We would like to do more than try to help work out your problems with the VA If you need help in dealing with the University or other normal (or even abnormal) problems that students usually have come see us (By the way we’re located in room 6 of Old Main from 8 : 00-- 9 : 30 on weekdays only) and 2:30-5:0- 0 Bring your ideas and problems to us It’s worth a try John Coyle 529-66-38- 'CERTAINLY THpRES A FLY IN THE YOU R SOUP -
