a statewide organization of student leaders whose lobbying effectiveness has already been well demonstrated at the Capitol Lund has also been the driving force behind an effort to induce publishers of textbooks used at USU to donate one copy of each book to the University to be put on reserve at the library The program could mean thousands of dollars worth of additions to our library Our current studentbody president has been involved in any number of other noteworthy projects but as I pointed out to my friend his most significant contributions have never been reported I told my friend that if “you never hear about Rex Lund” then it’s because of Lund’s effectiveness as a student leader not his inadequacy Puzzled he asked me to explain “It’s simple” I said One of the most important functions of government is to alleviate tensions within a community It would be hard to envision a community where everybody agreed on everything More often even reasonable men will differ And sometimes when they differ tensions develop Real leadership I told my friend is the kind that deals constructively with conflicts It recognizes 'the merit on both sides of the question and seeks to accomodate it Rather than L - r s $ a real leader consensus to create strives create-cAitrovers- y If you haven’t heard much' about Rex Lund I said it's because he’s spent his time putting out more fires than he’s set As a result he has earned the respect of nearly everyone who has had come in contact with him Lund may not have won a lot of headlines this year but top administrators at this University will confirm that Lund’s “quiet leadership” has made him one of the most effective student leaders in years i Above Rex Lund’s desk hangs a sign that reads “Disagreement does not mean disloyalty” For the current studentbody president that has been more been a way of than a slogan--it’- s life Doug Anderson is chairman of the Publications Board and former editor of Student Life-e- d Brent Harker editor readers and next year staff Magazine thanks members to decide its fate Editor: May I extend my appreciation and gratefulness to the following people who have made The Student Life Monthly 'Review a If real challenge and are:-Ros- Staff Editor-in-chi- ef Ken Passarella Sports Editor Sandy Rose Editorial Assistant Randy Hendricks: Assistant Sports Editor iodeane Albright Editorial Assistant Kristy Larsen Senior writers: Pauline Summers Dennis Frantzen Richard Brady Lois Walters Becky Gillette Lynn Lanier Features writer: Linda Backstrom Entertainment writer Susan Arrington Photographers: Tony Collis Business office: Steve Snow Steve Leggett Jim Quigley Magazine and offer advice The readers of the Monthly Review deserve a special thanks from me for their courage to pick up an unknown publication and follow it all the way The foundation of the Magazine has been laid now it’s up the 528-82-46- 28 Statement correction Dear Editor: I would just like to make on rT! clarification concerning your Athletic VP article Wednesday I have no intention of taking funds away from the food and nutrition building or from the greenhouses I merely wanted to make students aware of how much State the money Legislature does appropriate for an appropriation to the fieldhouse renovation for next year Any misunderstanding that resulted from Wednesday’s article is completely my fault for not making myself more clear Thank you Dennis James 528-7612- 88 V it the official student publication of Utah State University and is written and edited by students EDITORIAL POLICY is solely the responsibility of the editorial staff The editor can reserve the right to refute any publication at hit discretion EDITORIAL OPINIONS are solely those of the editorial board and those writers with signed articles LETTER POLICY The editor reserves the right to edit refuse or print any letter All letters must be typed on a line and signed with name and student number Names may be withheld by the Editor however at the student's request Published during the school year except during finals week by the Associated Students of USU Editorial offices University Center 315 business office University C alter 317 Printed by the Box Elder News and Journal Brigham City Entered as second class postage at University Station Logan Utah 84321 Subscription rotes $6 per year $2 per quarter Correspondence should be addressed to PO Box 1249 STUDENT LIFE 60-spa- Richard Albright i en- s couraging one for me They Peterson Douglas Anderson Clifford Cahoon John Flannery Alyson Lowder Val Christensen Desmond Anderson Robert Cole Tony Collis Richard Norm Albright Solomon Lucie Thomas Brent Harker and George Rhoades I am also deeply indebted to several friends who would not hesitate to comment on the Bsai Brent Harker Patricia Woodbury Managing Editor Carol Harmer News editor Steve Snow Business Manager an Sondhi Limthongkul Debbie Drage 4ft |
