Show Page 12 October 10 1973 “I played my first competitive softball game when I was a third grader and started p laving with the Shamrocks when I was 14” commented Fern Gardner who has just been named to the Utah Sports Hall of Fame The honor was awarded to the education structor for her many USU physical in- ac20 complishments during the years she played for the Shamrocks one of the top women’s softball teams in the nation Miss Gardner attributed her interest in softball to her family all of them are very recrestion-minded-an- d to her home town of Deweyville “Softball was about the only activity the town offered” she explained Following in the footsteps of her sister Miss Gardner started playing for the Shamrocks when she was just 14 Asked if that wasn’t just a little young to be playing for a team like the Shamrocks she replied that it was “But then I spent the first three or four years sitting on the bench a lot” When she was 19 the team lost its pitcher and the coach decided that Fern could learn to pitch And learn to pitch she did In 1969 she had 32 wins and seven losses giving up only 25 strikeouts Miss Gardner pitched 10 nohitters and during 1969 had 13 walks and had 232 more strokes off my average” she added consecutive wins She feels that everyone needs some sort of activity She said that when not playing ball she enjoys golf and tries to get out on the course several times a week “I’d like to compete in some tournaments if I can knock a few As to her feelings toward the women’s lib movement Miss Gardner admitted she wasn’t too much of a libber “I don’t think women can compete with men Instead they should have the same opportunities to compete as men do with their own programs I don’t want our program here at the university to be like the men’s however They have too many problems” she stated SUPPORT THE BUSINESSES DISPLAYING THIS POSTER Miss Gardner was selected as the most inspirational player by her team members for three years She has played in 13 national tournaments was in 1970 and was named most valuablejplayed in the tea&ffor five years an W al the professional art of applying science to the optimum conversion of natural resources to the benefit of man" Stanford School of Engineering's wide ranging graduate programs offer qualified men and women exciting avenues to rewarding satisfying professional careers The Stanford School of Engineering is searching for graduate students from among qualified majors in engineering mathematics and the sciences A representative from the school will be on campus to discuss Stanford's ten engineering departments and interdisciplinary programs research opportunities the financial assistance available and other aspects of engineering at Stanford B Wednesday - October 1 7th Make arrangements to meet him through Placement Center SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING Stanford University “Softball has given my many honors I had never been out of the state until I started playing ball’’ she stated adding that she has played in about 35 states and Canada y - I JV tryouts All interested in trying out for the JV basketball team be at the Spectrum Oct 15 and 16 at 6 pm You should have your own gear and some type of physical statement examination |
