Show Sspfsmbtr 24 1973 Page 4 ’s Paragliding Some people might think that jumping off a mountain (any size) with nothing between you and death or mutilation but a kite is crazy Okay it might be crazy but Gordon Boyce says “It’s a rush!” The sport is called paragliding and the vehicle is a 35 pound unit made of dacron and aircraft tubing a huge ‘‘kite''’ with a 170 foot wingspan Jim Foster of the Hobbit Ski and Cycle Shop in Brigham City and his “flier” Gordon Boyce took up the sport about six months ago “just for a kick” They purchased their paraglider from a private builder in Kaysville The cost- - $650 For demonstration flight we went out to Little Mountain southwest of Tremonton and trucked up to the top about 800 feet (give or take a few I guess) Foster and Boyce unloaded the folded up kite and put it together an operation that took only a few minutes It didn’t look like much of a thing to trust your life to but Boyce assured me that the kite was as safe as the pilot This would be a short flight because it was just a demonstration but Boyce and Foster have both been on long flights of several miles over the Brigham City area They have scheduled a flight from the mountains aboveto Logan into Romney stadium deliver the ball for the San Diego State football game As of this it writing it hasn’t happened-bu- t of six miles will be a flight Before take-of- f Boyce checked the wind velocity- - 20 miles an hour He’d never flown in a wind faster than 10 mph this one should be great The take off was a simple one Boyce strapped himself into a yellow plastic seat that was suspended from the kite’s frame and hung about four feet under the wings The steering bar hung just in front of him to he When he was ready go just started running down the hill into the wind It only took him a few steps before he was airborne Then he just made like a bird for a few minutes until he wiped out on the ground “That landing was lousy” a kick commented Foster when we reached the bottom of the hill to pick Boyce up His knees were grass stained and he looked a little embarrassed for his skid-dis- h landing He tried again two more times each time he lit gently on his feet perfect landings Both Boyce and Foster learned to fly off of Little Mountain and it was all just trail and error “There aren’t any instructions that come with this sport year" commented Foster “You just have to learn on your own” Foster is currently helping film a television segment of ‘Thrill Seekers” They are also planning a flight from the top of the Deweyville mountains on Oct 6 They hope to draw a large crowd mainly to encourage the sport Why do they do it? “We just wanted to fly it’s really a kick” And what do you do if you jump off that mountain and nothing Angel Flight a women’s service organization on the USU campus has announced that they will hold an introductory tea on Sunday Sept 30 at 3 pm in the UC Sky room The organization has performed such service projects as ushering at USU football and basketball games They participated in a toys for tots drive and traveled to Wyoming for a conclave involving six other universities “Nothing” says in the Intermountain area happens?
