' 2S V An impressive array of poets writers and lectures gathered at USU last week for the annual presentation V ?"V of the “Western Writers Conference” 4f :n-- Principal speakers for the weeks activities included Robert M Utley writer William E Stafford world - J renounced poet and important force in western literature Richard Ellis western writer Frank Waters author of the prize winning book “the Man Who Killed The Deer” J Barre Toelken folklorist medivial scholar and folk singer W Eugene Hollon professor of history at the University of Toledo William Eastlake writer of six published novelst and Thomas D Clark author and Distinguished Service Professor at Indiana University During mondays session Stafford stated “We are all earthdwellers we have no other boundaries anymore We must reach across these borders into other times and other circumstances” With this thought in mind both the speakers and audience dropped the normal boundaries of teacher and student and joined together in a combined learning effort One of the more dynamic personalities just ask the women present at the conference was J Barre Toelken After a short introduction Tolken proceeded to elucidate on his western knowledge through the very Folklorist J Barre Toelken entertained participants at enjoyable medium of folk music One song of particular “The Western Writers Conference” sponsored the event interested stated “Come girls come and listen to my noise don’t marry those Mormon boys For if you do your f outline it will be johnny cakes and babbies are all you’ll see” Whether the audience heeded the warning or not was beside the point the humorous lyrics that were the basis of many western folksongs were impressivelly explained by Tolken For many the weeks highlight took place Wednesday night at a barbecue held up Logan Canyon In a relaxed and easy going manor speakers and students joined in the friendly and beautiful surroundings eating exchanging stories and listening to J Barre Tolken sing folk songs Impressive t r y‘ ' Volume 1 Number a barbecue up Logan Canyon u June Utah State University 1 Register from 8 am - 3 pm - 18 1973 Fieldhouse instructions Registration ifi i 'v VS (Photo by Barry Willis) Make corrections for addresses & Phone Numbers in 1 -- ftb 1 m v r9 ± y r sr MB' ?
