Show Friday May 4 1 973 Page 5 Visiting prof covers US foreign policy by J Chris Larson senior writer James E Dornan Dr Chairman of the Dept of Politics at Catholic University in said Tues Washington DC 1 we need men of that May to our make responsibility in 7000 because foreign policy years of recorded history there have been only 68 years of peace He was speaking in the Sunburst Lounge as part of International Week on the subject “Nixon Doctrine and Foundations of US Foreign Policy Dr Dornan said that never before in the history of the United States has foreign policy been such a subject of debate He said that people who have been heretofore unconcerend with are becoming foreign policy ' concerned criticism is And he said not just from all sides coming One of the the Democrats reasons he cited for this criticism is the basic dissatisfaction of the people with the world situation and the thought that US policy should help the world become a better place Dornan said that this kind of thought has been present in the US since colonial days He said the early politicians believed in the distinctive quality of their social order and believed it to be unique Dornan stated that they were right in their thinking in that their social order was much different than that of Europe He also pointed out that the present goals and practices of the US separate us from other nations The founders saw future universal society as following their model government Dornan said and felt that God had given them a special mission He said that the US "really began formulating their foreign policy during the Spanish-America- n War According to Dornan we entered into WWI to keep a balance of power and because of rage at our neutrality being violated “We made war to end war” said Dornan He cited Woodrow Wilson as one of the first foreign policy makers and compared his philosophies to those of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams He also compared Wilson to President Nixon and said Nixon is wandering from Wilson’s doctrine Nixon has presented his doctrine on his opinion that the world has changed rapidly since the 1950s He says the recovery of Japan and Europe from WWII the new nations emerging and the breakup of the Communist monolith are evidences of this rapid change Dornan said that the breakup of US military dominance and the advances made by the Soviet Union’s military were also evidences of this rapid change Dornan said he classified himself as a pessimist but not an isolationist He proposed perceptive citizens and men of courage in responsible positions to formulate future US foreign policy Need Someone to Talk To?
