Show Friday May 4 1973 I "in editorial comment First Amendment The message of the Bill of Rights isn’t getting through to American students and it’s up to administrators to see that it does Walter Cronkite told the American Association of School Administrators recently According to the March 16 issue of Education Sumn CBS commentator took his mary the audience to task for the schools’ apparent failure to instill in students a real understanding of and respect for the Bill of Rights Cronkite quoted a CBS News poll that asked specific questions without indicating their direct relationship to the US Constitution The results said Cronkite were discouraging To the question “As long as there appears to be no clear danger of violence do you think any group no matter how extreme should be allowed to organize protests against the government?” 76 per cent said no thus in effect denying the freedom of assembly When respondents were asked “Do you think everyone should have the right to criticize the government even if the criticism is damaging to our national interest?” 54 per cent answered in the negative reflecting a lack of belief in free speech This clear contradition said Cronkite shows that “somewhere the education process has broken down” He exhorted administrators to wipe out “the contradictions between the theoretical acceptance of the Bill of Rights by vote and a full understanding of its One man’s view meaning” Cronkite concluded: “What promise this nation will realize when we all believe without hint of doubt that the words of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights mean precisely what they say and apply equally to every man of us rich or poor black or white northerner or southerner no matter how contemptible or untidy either his thoughts or his appearance “That lesson will not come through osmosis It must be taught fearlessly without favor to misguided patriots or heckling malcontents The place for that is in the classroom The ball is in your court” The ball is on our shoulders too Walter Students can do a lot to help their fellow students and teachers realize that the press must be free to comment not only on issues east of the Rockies but right here in Logan Utah as well Doug Anderson editor Concerned Be well-know- by Russell W Hawkins Jr expose us even further! to the utopia to be found by establishing a true union with Nature The idea should not be to conquer or to bite the hand that feeds us but to live in' harmony with that which we are a part of In essence to destroy our natural environment is in every sense to destroy ourselves The first form of any civilized human life upon the North American continent was the Indian Tribes were to be found from one coast to another-eac- h having their own way of life and established culture During Black Emphasis Week1 many of us got a first hand view of the Black Man in America We learned of the past the present and the future of Black America We saw the injustices done to him slavery by White America-from to slavery With the times a been it’s come but has progress been has He painful process denied the rights of a man but still is a man though the odds be against it Dignity and pride provide a guiding light on the dark road to freedom Education and opportunity are the only limits and as the angry Black mass grows these too will diminish in size and significance Black Emphasis we$k in ever-changi- ng Indian (Native) Emphasis week expressed the plight of ’the red man in his land His land stolen his pride damaged and his culture molested The many injustides done to him and upon his homeland can never be undone The wounds upon a people never fully healed Will the red man too become part of America’s melting pot? Is exhibited the fear anxieties nd frustrations of the essence Black Man in one hand and in the other the Black Movement exhibited the pride deter- mination and brotherhood of the Black people The Black Movement came to an end but not really to an end for the Black Man still seeks what is rights of any rightfully his-th- e human being With the growing concern and awareness of our natural Conservation Week was ushered in Ecology once a unique and sacred word used only amongst those disciples nearest to Mother Earth now has lost its innocence and has become a household word Many big business corporations boast to the media of all the good they do for the sake of ecology yet land is still abused natural water ecosystems are still being altered giant smoke pipes still spew their gaseous waste into our atmosphere and human resources still are being wasted Who is to answer? Who is to blame? You and I? No of course not! We never do anything to harm the environment but tell me do we ever do anything to help it? Conservation Week sought to genocide their destiny? The Great Spirit knows that every man every people and every living thing has the right to live the right to be and the right to exist None of us has the right to destroy!
