Show April 13 1973 Page 3 r Book review 4TO I story “founder’ tfyle L Thomas d I The original story of Sounder the hunting dog belonging to a struggling black family in the South in the 1930’s was told to William H Armstrong when he was a boy This book is the story as he remembered a visitor to his home telling it o one major trip He also does find a school teacher such as Camille was in the movie and eventually teacher must say I resent wholeheartedly Mr Martin’s attempt to make Ms Zuniga and I Wounded Knee panel Editor Student Life: like puppets of YSA myself Mr Martin had nothing to do with the plans for the panel and therefore could not have possibly known if we were “picked” to “promote” YSA which we were not look I am writing in regard to the interview with John Martin in Student Life concerning the panel discussion on Wounded Knee last Friday goes to live with the step The purpose of the panel was not to promote YSA but rather to promote Wounded Knee and inform people of what had happened there I think that was clearly evident to most people Head was included on the panel as she was an eyewitness to the happenings at Wounded Knee and for no other reason Ms ' r the dynamite blast and dies during the first coon hunt he is able to go on with the boy and Sounder after his return The language is one of the things that makes the book so touching It is simple and easy to read yet compact and concise The reader gets the same picture of the love and respect in the family as Cicely Tyson and Paul Winfield portray in the movie The dog Sounder is brought more into the symbolism of the story as an idea of ths happiness in the familv considering outside influences The fact that the first time the dog barks again is when the father returns to the family is missed in the movie but brought out significantly in the book Armstrong’s book may be just the beginning of a new period in American literature showing the life of blacks in this country after the Reconstruction began in the South It is a significant The story line is approximately the same the father is sent up to hard labor for stealing a ham and some pork sausages the wonderful hunting-hounis shot and disappears and the young boy searches the area for news of the camp wherFh'isTather may have been sent The boy makes many trips throughout the year however not just O by When the father returns in the novel however he is very badly crippled by There are some similarities in this book to the currently popular movie by the same name “Sounder” but there are quite a number of marked differences For one the time setting of the novel is rather indefinite all the reader knows is that automobiles are not in common use The time 1933 is definitely stated at the beginning of the film I think the article in Student Life could have been better used for a factual report of the panel discussion rather than an airing of one individual’s petty gripes with someone else I also do not understand Mr Martin’s comment about nothing happening at Wounded Knee that was reallly important I do believe however that what happened at Wounded Knee is far more important than what happensd to Mr Martin’s dog in an article he wrote earlier for ' usy mGiAGW r- - “ £ ‘ TFlFW“lFirfFWirTrirTTriFW‘WTFTFTFTTFVTFWTrWTF'lFTrW Ai?d1 AT W V ' "' TI&fHhi FAC P TICKET o 75c STUDENTS o $1 00 General Admission o $300 Maximum per Family r jlr i FEATURING: K(6©M i 1 : -- AAAliA IPHTUBS® : rMi BROADWAY STAR A±i±ttiimiJi‘ : J £ |
