Show May 25 1970 Pco4 Petition rrri rrmiin) a staff member who signed a petition circulated by the “Viii’ group I would like to describe what was signed and what was "not signed The vigil committee itself appears confused or is deliberately As UTAH SEQJi: trying to misuse the petition What I signed was a statement that the signatory upheld the right of the group to express Itself in a peaceful free manner It was not and I repeat NOT a statement of support far the protest movement nor did it urge the administration to take an cTicixl pcdtica against the war in southeast Asia nor did it support adding a course to our curriculum activists which course would be taught by anti-wThat petition did not urge students “to express their opposition to the war” etc It was a simple statement of the right to free peaceful expression I agreed and agree only to that in the petition I would be just as pleased to sign a petition to the effect that the administration has an equal right not to express or commit itself and that the students who demand such an expression or commitment are denying the administrators the freedom so vociferously demanded for themselves Certainly the vigil committee recognizes the demand to “use all of to serve the desires of the the university funds and facilities-committee is a thoughtless and juvenile demand and would reduce the facilities and funds available for all legitimate university functions to nothing Perhaps they prefer not to have a university ar the mailing of yearbooks to students during but venture why summer True it is a costly doesn’t Gerry Sherratt and other people concerned with the annual take this suggestion under advisement: Mail out only the yearbooks going to who will not graduating students and those without this And collecting do return in the fall four years of paying more student coins After a be tuition and fees it might jesture of kindness the to mailing costs to these for the school absorb Something is in the air and it’s kind of fishy The latest notoriety gained by the BUZZER seems to present students with the short end of the stick again Instead of distributing the yearbook during the final week of spring quarter as has been the rule the annual will not be delivered to Logan until July What’s so bad about this? Well how about the 50 cent “reservation fee” to be collected on top of the $750 taken out of each student’s activity people The rest of the studentbody who plan to return in the fall should be allowed to pick up the BUZZER when they return without going fe©S? When the year got underway things were to going to be different There was no plan was That Fine charge a “reservation fee” through the extra money hassle After all the University won’t have to mail yearbooks to these people and these students aren’t likely to throw a fit because they will have to wait a little longer They’ve already set their minds to waiting until mid — summer A little longer won’t hurt great Now with two weeks of school left notice is made that the fee will be required if students are to receive BUZZERS STUDENT LIFE understands that the “reservation fee” is planned to assist in the r I A vefco gJ fcoff OJOc-4VJ7WU- U Board but if this newly adopted committee performs as well in actuality as it appears on paper some of the communication problems encountered in the past should be alleviated The Higher Board has definitely made a step in a positive direction but still it is only a begin- Students are gaining a larger voice in University affairs by way of the Utah State Board of Higher Education’s adoption of a student liaison committee Although it seems a long time in coming (and it was - three meeting proposals before adoption) the new liaison committee members will be in a unique position to present the views of their respective studentbodies to the Higher Board It will be up to these ex officio members -studentbody presidents and vice presidents - to relate the genuine campus mood to ths voting members of the Board ning Perhaps a more ultimate goal would be procurement of the right of a student vote on the This would insure even greater Board representation of the group whose numbers would benefit from such a situation The Higher Board has acted on the student -- Hopefully the joint efforts of the demands for representation Now it will be up to Alan Croshaw and his vice presidents to plan out long-standi- their course of action during the summer in preparation for their initiation to the Board next fall Take heed student government officials the groundwork has been laid for a path of communications needed for a long time and now it is available Use the power wisely members and the fledging members will bring about a university curriculum and general understanding that will be more relevant to the needs of the students - the actual lifeblood of the campus There has been a definite void in communications between students and the Higher -- i ov® For some years I have taken a radical’s delight in putting down liberals Liberals are too ready to compromise I have thought and they are overly fascinated by institutions That is they are too much concerned enough committed to substantive reform Lately I have been taking another look at my theories The reason is that our American political structures based upon the constitutional division of power and the respect of minorities are under the most severe attack in our history The attack is by President Nixon and his administration It has two dimensions: first there is Nixon’s usurpation of the constitutional prerogative to declare war He is the first president in American history to invade another country (Cam- bodia) without seeking congressional approval or support He is not even up to Johnson’s kind of Tonkin-Gul- f maneuver he simply orders the armed forces to move Donald R Olsen Department -- PUNISH VIEWS The second dimension of the on democracy is to punish dissenting views and to pit one attack American citizen against another A pervasive climate of fear and distrust and hate has been created This is the terrible fog through which we must now move and make rational decisions I think a case might well be made for Nixon’s impeachment on the grounds of his disregard of the Constitution I think a criminal charge crossing state lines to incite violence might well be made against both Nixon and Agnew I believe with Whitney Young of the Urban League that the scornful and divisive language of these men Congratulations USU! For two weeks a group of dedicated inand a telligent and responsible students protested a war in Indo-Chin- a war on collegiate campuses A heroic vigil a beautiful march and a feeling of satisfaction crowded out all attacks bombs and namecalling the Vigil was threatened with The Vigil used all possible resources to stay on the quad to have a tent in fact to have a vigil These students of which I am one were quiet sincere and legal For 12 days a sincere action took place On the other hand the High Rise Richards and Bullen Hall broke God only knows how many laws on May 19 and May 20 between 11:30 pm to 2:30 am The dorms were bellowing obscenities from one dorm to another An obvious diversification from a law not allowing disturbing of the peace at unreasonable hours Secondly they organized and marched around campus shrieking barbaric phrases and calling for panties Four to five hundred students marched noisily around the streets with no permit An obvious illegal demonstration on campus They obstructed traffic used public obscenities disturbed the peace and marched illegally Dean Burtenshaw had no complaints security allowed the boys to have fun and Logan residents had no qualms about a good old fashioned panty raid Who is more degenerate? Who should acquire University recognition? Who should be threatened with arrest and suspension? A bunch of little boys in need of female underwear which can be purchased at Grand Central or a group of students protesting senseless murder and devastation here and in Vietnam Congratulations USU! Dick Carter Student Tom Lyon (they have called students '“bums” and “rotten apples”) is directly related to the murders of the students at Kent State and Jackson State the bayonetings of students at the University of New Mexico and many other examples of government and police violence But I don’t think we should propose or impeachment criminal charges We must realize that we live under the classical conditions for an incipient police state This is a really precarious situation We have to start building the country putting it together rather than further dividing it NOT SUPPORTING NIXON I definitely do not mean supporting Nixon in fact the opposite But it is especially urgent to support the social the compact laws and the right leaders--ou- r civilization of Geology Panties non-violeo- c® would-b- e with preserving the mere structures of politics and not ” when our President--disregar- these foundations d of Somehow we have got to meet each other helpfully and openly and keep this country together and move it toward We will have to lead ourselves by education and by legislation It seems to me that quicker remedies will call down the massive armed power of a true police state Nixon might well be happy for a pretext and we have learned that the trigger fingers are awfully itchy in this country So I finally come down to a liberal approach “My thoughts are murder to the State” as non-violen- ce Thoreau put it but such thoughts are now a luxury Instead of thinking this way or drifting into fatalism we are going to have to work: to reaffirm the essential soundness of the Constitution through legislative means and to deepen and broaden the nonviolent movement for peace until it becomes our way of life politically economically and spiritually WAR AMENDMENT In immediate terms means supporting the this McGovern-Hatfield-Goodell-Cranston-Hugh- es “Amendment to End the War” to deny President Nixon Cambodian operations after June 30 and to put a definite limit on the whole Southeast Asia monstrosity It means writing to our Senators Frank Moss and Wallace Bennett urging that they back this amendment And spread the word as widely as you can: many people are already under the illusion that we live in a totalitarian state Nixon is confident he can stop the amendment But as we very well know he has been wrong before any funds for |
