BY CURTIS STARR Editor Chief Copy college campuses this have been the scene year past Stu of student demonstrations have dents grown increasingly more unwilling to accept the idea that they have no say in determining how their schools are to be run USU has had no need to call in police to deal with demonstra ting students and a new idea being instigated in the recently separated College of Social Studies may prevent any future probMany lems Under the direction of Dean Judd Harmon the College of Social Studies has created what is to be known as a college council The council is designed to let students and college per sonel share the responsibility in college cur determining riculum staff evaluation me thods and other college matters affecting both the administrator and the student “I am concerned in this col lege that students have a voice in matters of concern to them” said Dean Harmon The newly created council is composed of 15 members Dean M USU men try and move into an apartment but get as far as front lawn (photo by Bart Right mire) Journalism Students Learn How It Is Sixty four young men and wo men from Idaho Utah Wash ington and Wyoming attended Utah State University’s fifth annual journalism workshop Participating in the one week June workshop were high school juniors and seniors who will work on their school papers and yearbooks this year The workshop was supervised by Marian Nelson chairman of the department of journalism at USU Nelson said this year’s workshop was “very successful” and that this year’s group of 17-2- 1 students was the best ever The program was divided into three areas yearbook news The papers and photography yearbook section was headed by Clyde Morris advisor to the All American Yearbook at Bear Ri ver High School Gary Johnston who works on the copy desk of the Deseret News was in charge of the newspaper division Pho tography was supervised by Rich ard Andre assistant professor of journalism at USU Classes were held every day from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Mornings were devoted to lec ture and the afternoon to lab Thirty visiting lecturers from the news media spoke to the stu dents Students in the newspaper produced a daily mimeo-graphepaper The yearbook di vision produced an 8 page year book at the end of the work shop The photography section provided pictures for the year book and for news releases about the students for their hometown newspapers Pfyte it the trademark Harmon will chairman the coun cil Heads of the three depart ments in the College of Social Studies department of history department of sociology and de partment of political science will also have seats on the coun cil Three members will be eletf ed from the staffs of each de partment one being chosen from each One faculty member will also be seated on the council Student members of the council will include three undergraduate majors selected from the three College of Social Studies depart ments three graduate majors from each department and the student senator from the college Dean Harmon explained that the council will meet twice month ly Student members of the coun cil will meet with the complete council once a month The Dean indicated that at the student meeting the council would deal with problems and suggestions presented by the stu dent members It is hoped that this type of arrangement between student and administrator will create better communications between the two and at the same time upgrade the educational level of the Col lege of Social Studies of International Dover Playlet Corp International Del (C)1968 Playlet Corp di-visi- d Y iY with a First Security Checkway Account!
