by PRESIDENT GEORGE A SMITH the choir sang kang with soy joy we own thy servants anast lord thy ministers below ender EIDER GEO Q CANNON read over a number of subjects suggested tedas as bein being profitable to be dwelt upon by the elders who would address the conference PRESIDENT GEORGE A SMITH alluded to the visit of himself and party to palestine and other cou countries n and stated that his appoint ment as trustee in trust tor for the church at last conference caused him to return home sooner than he anticipated he returned thanks and desired the blessing of bf god clod to r est rest u upon P 0 n all those who assisted b him m to go on that journey and those who had the disposition to do so but had not the means to carry out their desire he believed t that it the visit to palestine would ultimately result in much good the desolation that had bad rested upon the land of palestine because of the disobedience to the commands of god by hei people should bo be an abiding lesson to the latter day saint saints to be faithful to the holy gospel they had received every elder who addressed the conference should have the faith falth of the people assembled ritES PRESIDENT IDENT 11 YOUNG stated that the gospel of christ embraced in ill the faith falth of orthe the latter day saints comprised every truth of whatever nature in existence no falso theory was admitted into tho the grand system of salvation predicating his remarks on those grounds president young delivered a most instructive discourse manifesting great breadth and liberality of or view his remarks on the work which the faithful livin living 9 had to perform for the dead were logical and conclusive he said sald protes ing christians rne generally raily rally did not believe that the tiie 11 living ing could be baptized for the dead or that they cou could id act in any anyway way for far them ho he maintained that if this position I vib wib badet annd oreb being could not perform proxy or vicarious work fo for r another jesus could not die for anybody but himself thoe tho e who testified that jesus was tile the christ without doing ko 0 o by the holy ghost di did ld so by the tile of a merely historical or traditional falth faith but the true testimony of jesus could only be given by inspiration forthe things OF of god were only made known by the spirit of eod cod fod the next point dwelt upon by the president was the unity that existed among the latter day saints he also explained the cause that produced this oneness and what would be the giand grand and beneficial result of the spread of this principle among the people if the saints could only see things as they were there would never be another apostasy apo stacy atom tile the church and if tile the outside world could also understand the nature of the work of tile tiie lord all their op opposition pa 1 tion to it would cease he showed that to be self sustaining in all material things was with within the purview of the gospel PRESIDE DANIEL H WELLS bore testimony that the system embraced in the tho faith and practice of the latter day saints was the gospel of the son of god and that joseph smith was the favored individual cho senas as the instrument to usher in that plan of salvation in the present dispensation all intelligent tell igent beings would eventually have to confess that jesus was the christ before they could enter the kingdom of heaven jesus said that none could enter that kingdom without first bein being W born of water and of the spirit 11 all had to be baptised baptized sed and in tho the me cases of those who went behind the vall vail without having attended to this ordinance somebody dy living in the flesh would have to le tie baptised baptized sed for them this was iva on the same aple as that explained by jesus when he said that in heaven there was neither marrying nor giving in marriage those ordinances efad had bad to be performed on the earth by the authority of the holy priesthood ELDER GEORGE Q CANNON canson spoke of the prejudices that existed in the world with regard to truth caused by tradition and education if a man went forth into the world with the thel eible Sible in his hand to search for the church of christ and was devoid of prejudice lie he would look for a church organized in every particular similar to that described in the testament and which I 1 would have the same attendant gifts and blessings when the servants of god bore testimony of the tho work of the lord and did so ko under the influence of the good spirit many people believed but considerations and reflections with regald regard to the immediate consequences uen es of obeying 60 unpopular a doctrine doctrine as that taught by by the tho lat ter ten day saints had choked down tho testimony of jesus within them it required au an overwhelming desire for salvation and a sublime lime ilme courage to obey and bo be faithful to the truth as revealed in tile the gospel hence jesus had spoken of the straight straightness ness or narrowness of tile the way that led to eternal ilfe life the latter day saints in their gathered capacity were placed in a position to be tried and tempted in a way that they had scarcely previously dreamed of persecution had bad been endured by them without much ot a failure of faith falth oil on their part but the effects of the trials odthe of tilo present day were having very visible and deleterious effects on the faith falth of some of tile tho people the speaker hoped that the saints would never again bo be assail ed b by the violence of their enemies abut but if they ever became fitted for exaltation in the presence of god they would have to bo be tried the evil to be avol avoided deI dej now how over was too much love for the things of the world there was more danger to be apprehended from this source than all the tile mobs that could be organized and brought in opposition lust after the thin thins things s of the world had ruined tile the most powerful nations that had existed tilo tile saints therefore should hold all that tho they had subject to be used for the bui bul building up tip of tile the kingdom 9 of god wherever there existed a hunger for ease easo and wealth in place plue of a hunger for righteousness sooner or late later rth the a parties partis thus inclined would lose the spirit of god and go into darkness after the lust just for women this greed for gain wa was next in erder mer in is lyl ill s if the people would only bede bade be devoted to the tho cause of god they would eventually become wealthy for there was bothin nothing 0 to hinder binder this result elder cannon then pre presented serite d the names of wile tile following brethren as having been selected to go on missions
