Show The PARSON Page2 Letters to Editorial The Editor Mardi Gras Needs You Saturday Is Mardi Gras, and this year, under the chairmanship of George Ligeros, promises to be a big event. One man can only do so much to make an event such as Mardi Gras a success; it takes many hours and many people. Clubs and organizations are now methodically preparing their booths. The big trouble the clubs and organizations have during the days before Mardi Gras is no one seems to want to help. It's not that the students do not want to, but they think the presidents of each group have the needed help. Of course, this is not true, because usually it ends with the presidents and vice presidents of each club and organization doing all the work. Work can be fun, but when just a few participate then it becomes a chore. If every Westminster student in the next few days helps its group, Mardi Gras 66 will be the best event of the year. Job Well Done Skip Hill, president of the Westminster College Circle K, is to be congratulated for the way he and his officers handled the Idaho-Uta- h regional convention held here on campus this past weekend. It was, undoubtedly, the most successful convention the region has ever had. Because of such strong leadership and organization, the Westminster Circle K Club is one of the best clubs in the Idaho-Utregion. The outstanding club officers are: Skip Hill, President; John Marshall, Vice President; Steve Martinez, Secretary; Larry Gilson, District Governor. Once again, congratulations to a great ah bunch of guys. Is Government an Evil Because of such groups as the John Birch Society, and Americans for Freedom, the American citizens confidence in their government is low. Mr. Mitchells article in todays paper, makes the federal government look bad. He blames our government for the whole cause of inflation in our This is absurd, when most of economy. the economists say there are a number of causes for the spiraling of living costs. In the month of March the cost of! living went up .06, which is .03 too high!. The causes were the rise in food prices, rise in used car prices, and rise in consumer goods. But the food costs were the culprits in the overall rise of costs. Its not the governments fault that food Remember last prices have gone up. spring when many fruit crops were damaged in Utah and Florida; cattle killed in the midwest; and potato crops damaged in the south. ? The cause: a late winter storm in April of 65. This forced food prices up. When government puts control prices on steel, aluminum, and copper, its only doing if for the publics welfare. Because if the steel companies wanted to raise its prices just any old time, $5 a ton, everything on the board from cars to carving knives would go up in price. This is inflationary. If steel unions went on strike demanding higher wages, then, of course, the steel companies would raise the price of steel per ton, so that a profit would still be received. Again inflationary. The public must look at government as a tool for their own needs. If government is looked upon for the cause of all evils, then we should not have a government. But then again, the United States was founded upon a government for the peoDle and bv the people. K11 c. Beck Editor. . Dear Editor: Joe Ford and I recently attended a National Student Conference at Occidental College in Southern California entitled American in Meeting the Challenge: Transition. , The program was completely produced by the Associated Students of Occidental College, and the entire conference was a huge success. Perhaps for Joe and I, the most beneficial part of the conference was getting the opportunity to meet with other students from around the country, and discuss ideas about student government. By talking with students from Occidental and other colleges we received a great amount of insight and many new ideas. As the new officers take over the reins of the student government I would like to say that I enjoyed very much serving as a studentbody officer. I would like to think of this past year as one of improvement for Westminster. We had an extremely successful Homecoming. The largest number of dances were provided with live bands. Many clubs and organizations helped to make the social calendar a busy and successful one. I would especially like to express my thanks to Circle K in this for handling all the movies and numerous other events. Such groups and persons as the Gateway Trio, Charles Lampkin, Barre Toelken, Rosalee Sorells, and the amazing Dr. Polgar helped make it a full year. Of course we had our shortcomings and problems. Participating in SGAC sometimes dwindled. Communication with studentbody was at times minute. The constitution still needs revision. But all in all it was a pretty successful year. I would like to thank all persons who helped make the year what it was. A special word of thanks to Sherry Mulliken and Anne Showell who did so much to help. And most of all I would like to thank the incomparable Dean Stewart. This man has a positive attitude between his office and the students. He has gone the extra mile to help the students and without his help we wouldnt have had nearly as successful a year as we did.
