goods foi for the provo cooperative institution interested hon A P rockwood receives communications almost daily from parties interested in for reports of tile tiie the fish t department in utah for 1873 the snowing we have had bad four or five days of jt t on and oft that is all and now it is from knee to middle deep ih the streets and lots this end of the winter is one of the old fashioned sort and where there is any road at all the streets aro are threaded with the old oid familiar single file sheep walks and stringing and wading and floundering along them is how the pedestrian izing citizens cit elt liens ikens get about just now cowardly it is an invariable evidence of cowardice for persons to attack those who are known to be weaker than the assaulting party this Is what a gentleman thought yesterday erday when he saw a number of dastardly fellows pelting a de fenceless chinaman with snow snowballs snow balls bails it is not excusable in boys to be guilty of such meanness and how bov much more unpardonable therefore when indulged in by a lot of grown up lazy boo bles bies who should be arrested and fined for such unmannerly conduct they call such conduct fun but if it is it is very one sided incorrigible the complaints about boys indulging in the dangerous practice of shooting those little birds that are flying around so thickly at this season are frequent arid and emphatic A gentleman called today to day and showed us one among a number of small bullets which were shet sheb at some of those birds and arid which struck a front window of mr le grande youngs house south temple st endangering the jives lives of the inmates Apparent apparently lir there is 19 no other way to stop this practice than to have the parties engaged in it arrested and punished lied talking about the matter does docs not seem to effect much inui eli ell scaffold and elevator this morning we were shown by mr E F nf ehe the model of an Adji adjustable stahle stable Scat scaffold nold rold and elevator patented by mr A J Heavne rs the inventor of pittsfield rike piko county illinois it is the most ingenious inge contrivance of the kind we have ever seen and is suited not riot only for yon fon builders and painters but for fruit gathering and a number of other purposes by means of a crank and rope attachments the platform can be moved upwards or downwards to any desired height the platform can be made iong long on 11 1 1 or short ts as desired by placing extensions ions lons ht at each end or ft removing moving 0 them mr hoan is ia here for tor the purpose gosoir oft ir disposing of lit the tile patent pent th TerrItory still more of it the present snowstorm snow storm is now said to be the heaviest of any in this city for ten or twelve years about three to four inches more fell from last night till this afternoon making a depth of probably twenty one to twenty two inches on oil the level on the tho surrounding benches it is deeper the tell teli temple tempie e block snow plow has been dolg doing doig good work in learing tearing in 0 some of the sidewalk and a contrivance of the same character has been clearing the street railroad trade the shovel bri bil brigade gadery gadell have had a lively time of it clearing the snow from the roofs of buildings s and awnings as well as from tb the sidewalks in fr nt of places of business traffie traffic on the tile street still continues to ue be greatly impeded well boring machinery on saturday yin mr thomas winter received from froin the east a quantity of patent well boring machinery he intends as soon as the weather will permit commencing operations with it in this city and vi cikity it is claimed that it itis is suitable for obtaining common wells as well weli as artesian wells being simi elm lar to that used by tir mr house of corinne when he struck a stream of gas at tit that place last year the tile borer for a common well makes a hole eleven inches in diameter which when with iron or wood will admit a bucket e liches inches across the bucket is is fined by means ora of a valve on the bottom the machinery which 13 ls la 13 known as the biltz patent well auger can either be manipulated by three men or by horse power should the machinery do all that is claimed for it there can be no doubt about mr winters finding plenty flenty f of employment with it and it would prove a great boon to people living on the benches where it is difficult to obtain wells by the ordinary process city council at the meeting of the city council last night the following among a number of other othen matters were attended to petition of NV B Hibbard asking that the ordinance requiring special license to be taken by tel tei tele 0 graan companies be repealed was not granted one years yearns license fees of the W U T were remitted petition of W willis for leave to number the buildings of the city was reported on adversely and not dmn granted ted petition ot of D A M W society for the control of the waters of springs near union square with which to irrigate agricultural park was reported on favorably and granted on certain conditions petition of G GRush rushton ton and others for privilege of opening ath west street between north temple and ath south streets was reported arted on favorably and granted on condition that salt lake county make a road on that street petitions of john proctor and others and M bergstrom berg atrom and others asking that certain portions of the public streets be repaired 2 were reported on adversely and were not granted the committee on municipal laws was instructed to draft an ordinance to provide for the numbering of houses in accordance with the petition of general E I 1 na M barnum the codling moth the follow iba article on the codling moth was read before the horticultural society by mr john reading and was recommended by that association the tho the tho codling moth mother j I 1 or the appe apple worm seems to attract attic t considerable attention and well it may way as it seems to have made great progress in the destruction of fruit and unless some steady and effect effective measures ame are taken the chances are that we will have hav eavery a very poor show for fruit in the future considerable has been published already giving descriptions and modes of prevention and destruction so that any more said in that direction might seem superfluous but if we are to take sure and effective measures to prevent the tho spread of the moth we must continually keep keet the matter before the public and recommend the most suro sure preventive measures to effect the object in view the first operation should be to scrape the trunks of the trees frees where the bark is scaly and wash over afterwards with whale oil soap or strong lye lyo wash but not nob so strong as to injure the trees the scrapings should be collected and de destroyed by burning another plan is to place bands of hay bay or paper funnel shaped around the trunks of the trees say about two feet from the ground to prevent their upward travel changing every day or two and burning them but the most effective pla pia plan pian n is to place barrels or tubs of water in the evening with wilh lights placed on the tile surface so low down as to prevent the wind from blowing out th the ID light by this means the moth is 11 attracted to the light and either is burned or drowned these lights should not noh bo be more moro than fice five rods apart another mode is to have the in inde inside of the barrels greased or covered with something else of a mucilaginous nature and that would catch a all ali that come in contact with it it seeing that the tho months of may and june or when the trees gome come into bloom is the best time to put these plans in operation tas fas at that time the tile moths ar are on the wing As salt lake city is the most afflicted with the codling moth I 1 w would ouid recommend that there be an organization made for the purpose of effectually putting these plans nto into operation and that the work be G done with a will and f if this be done I 1 do not doubt that the tho ie progress of the moths moth will swill be considerably stayed and by bi such means we shall be able to secure to ourselves an abundant supply of good sound fruit from europe wo ule have been permitted ermit ted to
